Thread: Clearvue CVmax install and ducting

Don't glue the ducting as hard experience has proven that it is never right the first time or a new machine arrives just when you think it is right.

Some progress over the weekend with the room built and up, impeller housing and cyclone installed and the bin started, just need the catches to arrive for the lid.

started the ducting as well........but now have paid work to get on with so more next weekend.

a couple of questions for those that have been through this.
I
- I bought 150mm Flexi duct but it won’t fit over the 150mm PVC. What did you all do......it fits inside the bends but not the pipes
- I’m dry fitting the ducting with talcum powder and then using Alum tape to seal joins.....any other tips?
- with the blast gates, I couldn’t stretch the budget to get the Auto Blasts gates that are on this site so have to go manual at this stage....so I have to put the blast gates closer to the machines, will this cause a build up of chips and dust so when I open the blast gate they will fly into the cyclone? Anyone awake of this damaging the Clearvue?

once it’s all wired up with the VFD I will sound proof the room and line it.....I’m building a baffle box outside for the clean air

Good progress!
150mm flex is designed to fit in to 150mm female fittings and so can’t fit over 150mm duct.
Easy Duct have a 160mm flex that fits perfectly over 150mm duct but it is hellish expensive ......... about $100/metre.
I still remember the ‘unusual tone‘ in Glider’s voice when he rang me after picking up 10 metres of it! 🤭
What I do with 150mm droppers is use short lengths of 160 flex to do the flexing and a long piece of PVC rigid duct to do the ‘dropping’?

I like the lid lifting idea, it is the first time I have seen something like that and I will pinch your idea and make one for mine. I wouldn't worry about leaks at the joins as they will have just about zero affect on the performance. You will hear them if the cyclone is running and all the gates closed but when a gate is opened the leak will basically go away because the air will be supplied more easily via the open duct. my advice on blast gates is to use the rocking style as they can't jam and the patterns have been posted here in a sticky thanks to BobL. They can be mounted as high as you like and operated via hanging cord which is also a bonus as well. One gate in my system was mounted away from where the operator stood and I ran the cords through pulleys until the cords hung down to where I wanted them.

Chris has reminded me. I’ve still got a couple of surplus 150mm manual gates that have been replaced by auto blast gates. You can have them?

If your after 160mm flexible, try Eximo Speedloc. Last lot I bought was about $62 per metre.

One of the neatest dust drum lid lifting ideas I've seen was at one of the mens sheds which had the lid attached to a SS wire - the wire ran up and over a pulley above the drum to a counterweight. The CW was normally hooked up to the frame releasing the tension on the wire so the drum lid was sucked onto the drum. To lift the lid the CW was unhooked and left dangling mid air.

A little bit more work done on ducting and the baffle box to reduce the noise.

I ordered my CV Max from Clearvue but the distributor in the USA sent a CV1800 cyclone in a CVMax box, the Aussie Clearvue team have been great to sort out and should have my Max cyclone in a week.

just need to get the Flexi sorted out and the Auto Blast gates, then once the cyclone arrives I can get the electrician in. So looking forward to getting this running

I assume you are just venting exhaust air from the Clearvue through the baffle box?

If so, given that a substantial component of the noise from a Clearvue doesn't come from the air exhaust your baffle box may be over kill. Most Clearvue users seem to get away with a straight thru type muffler.

I notice you're also using a mesh screen on the baffle box exit, I reckon that might provide significant back pressure. It would be interesting to see some manometer/pressure measurements between inside and outside the shed, with and without that screen. Also measure with and without baffle box (just take the front cover off).

I isolated my CV Max assembly by mounting it to a freestanding wooden frame bolted to the concrete floor which virtually eliminates all except airborne sound transmission. The dedicated shed was packed with sound insulating batts and the wall nearest the shed wall was overlaid with AngelStep 484 12mm acoustic sheets. I suspect that a significant proportion of the sound now comes through the pipework but it's well within an acceptable level.

My outlet goes straight to atmosphere.

Not at this time, Pete. Although your post led me to find a decibel app on iTunes; so I can take some comparative measurements when I return to the farm next weekend. My nearest neighbour is a kilometre away so it's never been an issue.

Hi Pete, I’ve been to Glider’s farm and I have noticed that the kangaroos in the top paddock prick their ears when he turns it on but then go back to grazing, the cattle do the same except they show more interest because they will soon get fresh sawdust to eat and the cars that pass every hour or so can still be heard? 😁
