Comparison of air filtration units

We are interested in getting an air filtration unit. Hubbie currently is using the triton dust bucket attached to vacuum cleaner (effectively creating a cyclone system) which is doing a reasonable job at getting rid of much of the larger dust (and is good about using dust masks/ powered respirators etc). While we realise that a proper dusty eg Hafco 2hp would be better (especially for the thicknesser) but at the moment we are inclined to add an air cleaner/filtration unit first as we would like to get rid of the really fine dust. (I'm a severe asthmatic so very aware of the hazards of dust), also all of the work is done in the garage - I've lost track of the last time the cars fitted there - and as it connects to the laundry I would particularly prefer to get the dust out of the air.

My question is has anyone done much comparison over the different units I've found posts on the forum over the AF-12 and the JET AFS1000BVB but no comparisons. Last timber and woodworking show we vaguely remember a demonstrator showing another type - can't remember the brand but I think it was more expensive. Why did people choose the one that they did?

It is very good and the support is excellent. I ordered it at the Canberra show and it was posted to me. I bought it because it is easy to roof mount and not heavy. It works really well and the filters are easy to change. I do not have any equipment to verify the technical claims but the it certainly appears to perform to spec. The guy is very obliging and mails out new filters on a phone call.

I am recently had to cut up six sheets of MDF and used dust extraction etc. It was amaxing how much fine dust was still collected by the microclean. You just have to vacuum the filters periodically. I would buy again,

Ahhh . . . If you do this I hope you take the filters outside the workshop or you have a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner. if you don't, the really fine particles will pass straight thru the average vacuum cleaner and back into the shed air. Remember its the fine ones that do the damage and hang in the air, generally you cannot see these they are too small, even on the microclene filter, but they are there, they are just swamped by the bigger bits.

BTW the simplest solution for the average home woodworker with an existing DC to clean the fines out of shed air is to put the bags outside the shed. That way all the fines are outside and are quickly diluted in the atmosphere. To clean up the air just leave the DC running for a while after you make the dust.
