Making cone for Cyclone
Hey guys,
I have trawled through all the threads on making a cyclone, and i have decided to follow the steps from Wayne's web page. I just want to make a small one.
The only problem i have is how and/or where can i get a template to cut out the cone peice. Wayne's page says he used Bill Pentz's spreadsheet, which i have tried but it only gives the diemensions of the cone net. I m hoping for a template that i can just trace onto the steel sheet.
Also is Aluminium sheet ok for it? about 0.6m thick.
Thanks guys.

All the relevant measurements are there, just draw your own template, or draw it onto your material.
Most alum sheet is hard drawn, bloody difficult to shape if you don't have a set of rollers. Would suggest very light gauge steel.

Aluminium in 0.6 mm? That's nearly foil - I'd be a bit sus' of 1.6mm unless it was a special alloy & hardness. Take another look at Bill Pentz's site about metal thickness - even Gal. Iron needs to be a fair thickness to avoid imploding - remember that the pressures stated are 'per square inch' - that is EVERY square inch of the thing has that many pounds of pressure applied, which adds up to a few tons over the whole thing.
For the cone template - just get a couple of large sheets of paper, tape them together & then draw the cone with a stick, some string, a nail & a pencil. Most libraries will have some basic sheet metal work books that will tell you how to set out a pattern from a few basic measurements, or do a 'Google' search on 'sheetmetal' + DIY.

Used to have a link that worked out a template for a cone, but link is now dead.
May be worth googling cone layout or variations to get something.
For my cyclone cone, I used that handiglaze clear polycarb that laserlite make, stocked at the hardware, that comes 1m wide & 1mm thick. Joined it with pop rivets and polycarb-save silicon. Was fiddly to do (would be easier with someone to help) but worked out well and cheap visual thrills by seeing the chips spiralling down.

Try this page for the formula to calculate the cone dimensions.
Enter the cone diameters & height & the resulting layout is drawn for you.
I too used 1mm polycarb for my cyclone & it works a treat.
Don't forget to add 10mm or so to the end when cutting out the cone to allow for joining. (DAMHIK)

Standard aluminium foil, according to my recently calibrated Mitutoyo micrometer is approximately 0.025mm thick, heavy duty 'camping foil' is 0.06mm thick, and generic brass sheet that is stated to be a nominal 0.10mm thick is 0.12mm thick with 2 coats of acrylic laquer on it.
Only know that because I was using ally foil as shim stock just today.

Cyclone
Hi ,guys & girls.A few years ago i brought a book that deals with blower design.
It also has a section on dust collection , cyclone design , pressure testing etc.

I can recommend Dave Gingery's books. They are available from Plough Books in Geelong.

Having had exactly the same requirement, someone put this up on another thread. Type in the dimensions, and it gives you a template
