    Default Cyclone Impeller

Like a lot of long term members here I no longer contribute to the forum these days and rarely look at it.

I have been asked by a forum member to initially quote on a 16" impeller ala a Cyclone Max and if the interest is there I can make a batch of them. By making it 16" it gives choices on how the cyclone is used and installed because if it is run at a lower speed 150mm ducting can be used at say 50hz with the same extraction performance as a CV1800 @ 60hz. Running a large impeller at a slower speed will have the benefit of less noise but the speed can be increased if needed. My preference would be a 17" and run it at 40hz but I won't make one until I have tried it myself and at the moment I can't do that.

If there is anyone here who is interested PM me initially as I won't be monitoring this thread and further contact will be made via phone or email so include those details in your PM. CV impellers were always a stupid price though I did sell a few and my target is going to be hundreds cheaper. I will specify a motor as the spindle size needs to be the same for all we make and if needed I can supply the VFD to suit but that will be up to you. It will work from a 220V single phase or 415V but I recommend in either case to use a VFD for speed control. All the information to build the cyclone is available from Bill Pentz's website but be warned that you will need a bottle of headache pills to digest it all. I think it needs a lot of repeat reading to digest it all but for the purpose of building a cyclone most of it can be ignored.

For the single hobbyist I recommend a 150mm duct installation as you will only have one blast gate open at a time. By using a VFD you can select the speed you want easily for any particular reason and the hard start which requires huge current does not occur and this also means it is kinder on the motor and impeller.

Anyone who already has an 1800 can increase the performance by raising the speed or fitting a larger impeller, this has been done and one of the members here was pleased with the results so if you have a noise issue with a 15" impeller fitting a larger one will help mitigate the problem and I bet you could sell a 15" impeller fairly easily.

Contact me via PM if there are any questions but feel free to discuss it here if you are interested. Another reason for me not to discuss this any further on the forum is I am offering something for sale outside the market place and that is not allowed.

Thank you Chris! I am interested in a 16" impeller.

I highly encourage others that are interested in making their own cyclone to get in touch. I have started looking at buying or sourcing other components and there might be cost savings if I buy more than one.

    Default Cyclone Impeller

This is interesting to me as I’ll be moving into a new workshop space soon. Having an impeller and appropriate motor would be great. Are the cyclone housings metal or plastic available to build somewhere does anyone know?

Budget going towards a dust respirator helmet is as much as a cyclone build so it’s worthwhile considering each option

    Cheers

I assume the spellcheck devil changed metal to mega.

You can make a cyclone and impeller housing out of pretty much any anything. The ClearVue is made from MDF and the PETG plastic. Polycarbonate is very good and more common. Don't use plexiglass (acrylic) as it shatters more easily. Sheet metal riveted / screwed together with sealant or welded if you have the skills and equipment. Fibreglass, bent plywood, solid wood etc have all been used. It comes down to what you are comfortable making or get made locally.
