    Default My Cyclone - WIP

Made around a couple of plastic bins from bunnies, and a sheet of polycarbonate made into a cone with silicone seal glue.

Looks like a ripper!...............how are you finding the polycarbinate to work with and where didi you pick it up.....................I'll keep tabs on your progress with interest.

Are you creating the cyclone to formula or making it up as you go???

Regardless looking good at this stage well Done!!!!

G'day, Lou. Polycarb: mark out with permanent marker, cut with kitchen scissors, pretty easy really. Picked it up from bunnies.

No formula: just making it look like the other cyclones around the place, Penz etc. Spent one of those recent hot days in front of the computer doing a drawing of it, and working out some of the details. I made a spreadsheet to work out the cutout shape for the cone (I had found a website that did it, but it was down the day I needed it). SWMBO saw me doing it and said, 'you mean maths is useful?' I despairingly pointed out that Microsoft Word probably does a thousand bits of mathematics each time you type a line into it. Shakes head in despair...

    Default Huh?

Can I ask a really stupid question? What does a cyclone do apart from destroy the lives of thousands of poor black americans in New Orleans (yeah I know..that was a hurricane)?
It looks a bit like the yellow cone bit in our Dyson vacuum cleaner!

    G'day Shedhand.

Cyclones are used as particle separators in woodworking. They form a circular air flow, forcing the dust to the outside, and sucking the cleaned air from the central 'eye' of the vortex. The cone isolates the collected dust from the vortex, allowing the particles to drop down into the lower collector bin. Probably does something similar in your vacuum cleaner.

Further to what Zen said as the air spins around all the dust etc is thrown to the outside. The air and dust travel down. As the cone tightens the air slows and actually reverses it's direction and starts going upwards. By this time gravity has got the dust and the now clean air goes up and out through the top.

Actually Jill you can't go too far wrong making a cyclone. I did mine with a couple of buckets and a bin I bought from bunnings. Others here have done the same and it is effective and cheap. MMMMM Cheap and cheerful compared to the one Zen has done.

I put the bucket cyclone on top of a wheelie bin and a scavenged cyclone from a timbecon Dust Collecter on top of that and then a box on that which is basically a duct to a collector bag. It's not too bad but nowhere near as nice as the one that Zen has made.

Looks to be coming along nicely

Noticed in bunnies the other day they are now putting a little cyclone thing onto the B&D mouse sanders, interesting if it does a better job than my cycloneless one

Fella: soon as I successfully fire it up, I'll post the drawing. If it implodes, well, ...

Studley: Yep, lots of circles and donuts in this project.

oges: must be a small cyclone to fit in a mouse sander.

Why do I get the feeling that this "cyclone" was devised by the marketing dept, not by engineers?

    Cheers!
