Haha, no worries Tonto, I'll keep that in mind. I did wonder what would happen if I turned it on.

Next job is the baffle box and the blast gates and I'll be using the table saw a bit for all that so I'll fire up the dusty and see how it goes then. I'm also interested to see if it's any quieter in it's new configuration.

I placed the DC in its' new home for the first time and it fits nicely. I was then able to finalise the dimensions for the baffle box. It was a bit of a strain on the old grey matter trying to work out the internal space to give a minimum of double the surface area of the duct but I got there.

I put the baffle in place today and started applying carpet on the inside surfaces to reduce noise. I also boxed in the outlet to pass out through the cladding.(haven't cut the hole in the fibro yet) The front of the baffle has a hole in the top left hand corner.

I have run the DC a few times now and although I haven't measured the sound levels yet it does seem a little quieter, but the main problem is it keeps blowing off the pleated filter so I will have to address that somehow. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Have you measured the pressure between the impeller section and the filter section? If it’s too high it will blow off the pleated filter. Is the filter used or new?
Mine is a fully modified 2hp with a pleated filter and I put in a measuring port between the impeller section and the filter section and found the pressure was higher and this reduced flow but it wasn’t high enough to blow off the pleated filter. I added a Thein filter on the unused outlet on the filter section that is left after you add the new 6” inlet.

The filter is used, I've had it for years. I did empty it out and give it a good clean out before I refitted it. So is it possible the filter is not letting enough air out and thus reducing flow? I also wondered if the foam seal I'm using isn't very effective, maybe I should get a better quality rubber seal of some kind? Also, I don't know what a Thein filter is, sorry.

A Thien filter is a very effective dust separator (works on the cyclonic principle) if built correctly. I have used it as an additional filter to the pleated unit ie. I have two filters in parallel to share the outlet airflow and filtering thus reducing the outlet pressure. Mine is built into a a 44 gallon drum.

Make yourself up a U-tube manometer and measure that pressure Lapps is talking about. See Sticky for details of how to make the U-tube.

It could be your pleased filter has become clogged by inadvertently extracting air ladened with some kind of sticky finishing product.
If this dries on the filter it can permanently clogs it and there's no way of cleaning it and it would have to be chucked out.

According to BP, a clean PF should have pressure drop of around 1 to 0.5" of water column, if you observe more than this you have a clogged filter.

I have seen industrial strength PFs held dow with clamps like these - these can be obtained at trailer parts shops - Also Bunnings has then fro not too outrageous a price.

Thanks Bob and Lappa, looks like I need to do a bit of homework on that whole test point/manometer business. It would be handy to know that pressure and see if the filter is working effectively.

Yes Dmorse, I did consider the ratchet strap idea as well, it does make some sense.

Haha, I know right, what a find! I couldn't believe they were throwing it out. I think it will finally find its' rightful place, sealed away in a DC shed in a thick MDF box, never to see the light of day again.

Here's a photo of the test setup, I have an old gas manometer which measures in kpa, so multiplied by 4.019 to get around 5.6" WC.

Well there you go.

I worked it out that you have 18 kg of lift force acting on that filter and from memory they only weigh about 12 kg so no wonder is lifting off.

Have you tried (gently) blowing it out with a compressor?

This suggests that Anyone that has to hold their PF on their DC should get a new PF.
