New DC 'project'
And I shall call it; the Dustenator 3000!
Ok, now the jokes are out of the way, on to business.
My girlfriend's dad worked in scrap metal in Mildura for a while, when he came back to Adelaide he bought me this (see attached) salvaged from the pile destined for the crusher.
For the DC savvy out there, do you think that this would be a worthwhile project, or do yuo think that I would only be wasting time/money? Obviously it needs a good bead blasting, new coat of paint and 7 of the mounthing holes need re-tapping but other than that it seems in reasonable good structual order.
The other thing I need to address is the lack of motor. It had a 3phs 2800rpm unit on it, but that was burnt out. I have 3 phs power available in my shed now, but I know that I will not always be renting this house so I am thinking of something more along the lines of a 3hp 15A job as putting a 15A socket in a shed would be a hell of a lot easier/cheaper than getting 3phs hooked up if it is not alread there.
I know the impeller looks a bit sketchy in the pics, but it is made from 2mm plate steel and balanced. For the exhaust side of things I was just planning on dismanteling my current DC and using the collection bag/filter setup on that.
Any opinions or advice?

Hi socratous, what a great find, Do you know what the cyclone was used for.
I don't know about the DC savvy bit but from looking at the pic it looks like its a similar size to the one I built (pics), I really can't see why it wouldn't work, how well it works will also depend on the rest of you setup.
BTW I exhaust mine directly outside my shed.Regards
Al .

I'm not sure what it was used for, all I know is it has been in the pile for nearly a year. Hence the rust (soon to experience the wrath of an industrial blasting chamber).
Are you using the carbatec tradesman extractor fan unit on that? I'm leaning towards that option as it is only $150ish more than the motor setup I was thinking of using, will move about 85% as much air and have a bag and filter. I can't exhaust outside as I am renting (cutting hole in wall not an option!) and the ideal spot for the cyclone isn't near a window or door.
The only thing my cyclone doesn't have is the downward angled inlet, mine is square to the cylinder body. It does have the internal air ramp though, so hoping it won't lose too much efficiency as a result?

Yes the blower and motor are from the carbatec tradesman dust extractor CT-2042
Thats a buggar that you can't exhaust outside. For the exhaust I would use a filter rather than the bag from the dust extractor as it should give you more efficient filtration.
I wouldn't think you would lose too much efficiency from the inlet not being angled.Regards

No worries, I'll post some pics once I get it all built and the shed kind of organised! atm the shed can comfortably house 6 cars, yet I am running out of room!!! I really should get around to actually putting stuff in the cupboards one of these days lol.

Only issue is that once I buy my own place and stop renting here, I'll be f&$@ked with a normal size garage! lol
I just can't believe the amount of crap I've accumulated since living here, I think I could quite easily fill up a 4cu/m skip with a good shed cleanout. Maybe a smaller shed would be better for me? Did I just say that? I've been listening to my girlfriend too much. I may just have to check myself into the loony bin if I keep thinking about a smaller shed...
