Default Small workshop dust extraction and thanks

So the simple idea of improving the dust control in my workshop turned out a bit more involved than I thought. Started out thinking clearvue despite the fact that my neighbour who installs industrial air conditioning said it involved an unacceptable amount of f----aroundery. That turned out not to be an option anyway . As always many compromises but progress has been made. I (hopefully) include photos. Any suggestions before I make more "permanent"attachments welcome.

The next step enclosing and venting the extractor and hopefully some noise reduction .Unfortunately I can't vent directly as the wall behind DE faces a neighbour's child's bedroom. I'm thinking running some 300 mm hvac ducting to the far wall where the exhaust fans are with some sort of muffler along the way, suggestions appreciated. A big thank you to all who contribute to this forum advice and knowhow has been a huge help.
    Cheers, Dave

Well done. How effective is the WoodRat collection? A hard beast to tame as it isn't enclosed like a router table.

Yeah Pete the woodrat is a work in progress. I have opened out the official dust port as much as I dared and think I will try to make a diy articulated arm so I can move the front flexy around as required. Not sure how to approach that as I often use a mortising rail which complicates things. The computer monitor arm I used for the lathe was a bit disappointing in th range of movement it allows.

It might be my imagination, or the photo's perspective -- but is the verticle pipe to the dusty smaller than the other pipes in your setup?

It’s the same 150 mm pvc must be the perspective

Had the same thought myself, Ian, until I compared it to the Besser® blocks adjacent to that section of ducting. They are 190mm high, so the ducting into the DE would be approx 150mm.

So a case of foreshortening to get as much detail into a photo inside a small workshop.

    Dave, is that the case?

Edit: Redundant post as Dave posted while I was writing this...

Thought I should revisit this thread as i have now enclosed the dusty and my experience may help others considering noise reduction. The felder af22 with 380mm straight bladed impeller is very loud and I was doubtful as to how effective an enclosure would be. The construction was a pia due to the irregularity of the walls but I was pleasantly surprised as to how effective a layer of chipboard with 90 mm earthwool was in reducing the noise. According to my niosh phone app the db at 10 feet was 92db with no enclosure and reduced to about 72 db with the dusty enclosed and one gate open. With all gates closed sound reduces to 62 db so most of the sound is now coming from the air in the ducting so a fact of life. Pretty happy and hoping to do some woodwork now after nearly a year! A questionfor the boffins my neighbour measures airflow in industrial air conditioning systems and is keen to drill a whole in the main vertical duct to measure the air speed. Is this worth doing? Cheers Dave

There's a bit of a difference in the air speeds in AC ducts versus DC ducting.
Suggest you neighbour reads this before making measurements.
DRAFT: FAQ - Dust Extraction (Practical Aspects)

What you will find is a single point measurement will not be accurate enough - it takes a bit of effort to get the "right result"

He did say he would take multiple measurements at different pts in the duct. I mentioned some of the points you raised in that thread and he did seem to know what he was talking about. Not sure we're up for dividing the duct into 1cm sqare sections though

Hi Dave, With your noise enclosure on the dusty, how did you handle the return air venting? Does it return back into the shop through some soft of muffler/baffle exit from that enclosure? Thanks for the post.
    Cheers,

I hope he has a air meter that can measure fast air speeds. is I said air flow in AC is usually much smaller than DC.

Hi Simon the top of the enclosure has a box 500 x 700 with an opening to the enclosure of 500 x300mm. I originally intended to line this with earthwool as a sort of muffler but ran out of insulation. The sound reduction was pretty good so i didn't bother. The exit to the box is connected to about 4m of 300mm hvac which will eventually be vented outside but presently ends in front of the 2 exhaust fans. The filter seems to work pretty well so far according to my ebay pm2.5 meter with levels remaining low. I expect things will start to leak so thats why I will try to vent outside. Cheers Dave
