Disc/Belt Sander combo extraction

Greetings. so I have a little ryobi disc/belt sander I am looking on sorting out the extraction for. My extractor is a 2hp holytek jobby so it has the motor already mounted up high blowing straight into the bags with a 125 to 2x100 on the top and the hose runs from that will be around 2m tops, while I would love to take it out to 150mm from the impeller I just haven't been able to find even vaguely sensibly priced 150mm fittings here in nz. I always use a respirator when doing any work and leave it on till I have vented the garage (main door is other end from extractor venting) so I am fairly comfortable with that part of the setup. I know I wont be able to catch all the fines from this tool

My current thinking was to build essentially a box around the disc table some distance back (so air can get around the table and down into the hose) and have the hose mounted at the end near where the existing factory "port" is. I dont use the table on an angle so I'm fairly happy with restricting that if needed. I would have one 100mm line going into the end (marked in red) and then place the other 100mm I have above /beside the part depending on what it is to catch the excess. The factory plate covering the lower half of the disc would be turfed for allow the air a good grab at it.

The whole thing will be mounted on a board as I swap between tools and don't have acres of work bench

My thinking was if the back is also boxed up then I could remove the factory shroud from the end and the new box would take care of that end of the belt then I could also have a free hose to poke around the top when using the belt.

Any thoughts or anything I have missed?

Hi wobbz,

did yu get round to the 'dust catcher' on your sander? I have just ordered a similar sander and it woyuld be good to have an update and possibly a couple of photos if not too much trouble.

I have a similar sander and the 50mm port is badly undersized.
I like your idea about boxing in the machine, much better than anything I have thought of. I might suggest locating a pick-up port near the end of the belt since this seems to be a heavy dust area on my machine.

Yup that is a good idea, maybe the midpoint between the two. I might have a play with some incense sticks and see how well it picks up from each depending on the nozzle position. I was thinking of making a couple of dummy lids so if I was using the belt I could plop it over the table so there was more pull of the belt are and vise versa, just need to make sure there is still enough airflow.

So here is MK1

Since the photo I did move the unit so there is roughly an even gap left to right of the table. The centre line of the dust nozzle is approx 20mm back from the disc face

What I have found (using the disc)

The plastic shroud on the end of the sander (With the factory dust port) is actually pretty essential to guide a big chunk of the flung dust out the end, without the shroud in place a lot of dust ends up sitting under the unit or gets blown out towards the back left hand corner, there is a little corner piece in the shroud that pushing its more out the end and nicely into the air stream of the collector hose.

The metal plate on the bottom half of the disc should be removed, with it in place visible dust is flung off the disc and upwards into the air, with the bottom half removed it comes out the bottom and gets sucked up in a stream into the dust port I have placed at the end (or contained in the box). With it off and the extractor going I cannot see any dust coming up above the table and going into the air.

The gaps around the table have a pretty good airflow around them pulling down.

Tomorrow I will play with the belt end!
