I've a mate who uses one on his Triton and small powertools; he seems happy with it.

I doubt it'd be effective for a lathe, you need large air volume to effectively scavenge the dust/shavings being thrown off. I seriously doubt it'd be much use for a thicknesser or any tool which produces heavy shavings.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

I can't see why not but the same problem of dust in the vacuum applies to the built-in unit. You have to keep as much fine dust out of the collector or vac filter as possible. That's why I'd still put a mini-cyclone in between the vac and the tool.
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

The common wisdom is no. The commercial dust extractors rely on high volumes of air flow, rated in CFM and use 4-6 inch dia pipes.

A vacuum cleaner may work for small individual tools but won't generate the air flow to collect the dust from saw tables etc. Also you'll have a problem with the filter bags and fine dust.

Be better than nothing I guess, but 1HP dust extractors are only around $100 anyway. Conversly the large dust extractors are useless for small hand tools, ie sanders, wont give the suction at a 1'' dust port - a vacuum cleaner is much better. Funny old world hey?
