Warning Major gloat: new cyclone!
Well, almost
Drove into town the other day to check the mailbox and spotted a Dyson upright vac on the roadside. It had been used to vacuum up plaster dust and looked a bit battered. I figured that someone had burnt it out by clogging the motor with plaster dust (a not uncommon occurrence). I decided to sling it in the ute and take it home to cannabalise the cyclone section out of it.
Took it home and plugged it in and it ran, but no suction. Opened it up, shook about a cupful of dust out of the filter, washed the filters and cleaned the dust out of all the pipes. I partly dissasembled the cyclone (more than you're supposed to) to clean it out. Put it all back together and cleaned the shed floor in about 5 minutes. That's about 15 minutes less than it takes me to sweep it. Plus after I sweep I need to stay out for a while to let the dust settle. It's got a motorised brush head which really gets all the fine stuff out of the rough section of concrete in the entrance (last batch of concrete was bad). Havent worked out how to adapt the onboard hose/wand assembly to use it for dust extraction to my ROS, but I'm pretty happy to have a $500+ machine just for cleaning the floor.

Insert medium length low whistle from me. (It would have been a long low whistle if you told me you picked up a cyclone from a disused granary!)
Here's a pick of my ROS adaptor: http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...8&d=1132473442 It's a bit fiddly to get on and off, but works fine when you need it.
I'm "gunna" do a permanent one with a bit of poxy and fibreglass one of these days.
Cheers.

Bugger, I've been wanting to use SWMBO's Dyson to experiment with a longer "swirl" section to see if I can get it to drop the dust into a catchment container.
I don't know why she won't let me.
