Dust extraction
Hi all,
I've got 2 questions about dust collection: 1) Does anyone have any knowledge, experience etc about Sherwood FM-15 portable dust extractor?; 2) I've only got a couple of machines that need to have a dust extractor fitted and was thingking of putting a 4" pvc pipe on the ceiling that extended outside the shed to attach the bag to. The idea being to get any dust coming out of the bag to be expelled outside the shed. This way, I should be able to attach a portable dust extractor to my machines with 1 hose and then attach to the fixed pvc pipe on the ceiling with another flexible hose. Would this work?
Grizz.

Cant see why not, the plus side would be better cfm at the machine as the piping between the machine and extractor fan could be very short... so you wouldnt want to restrict it after the fan and loose that advantage... I'd make the overhead outlet pipe bigger than the inlet pipes on the extractor to make it free flowing as possible.
You could also add a couple full sized filter bags instead of the tiny one that comes with those portable extractors... or have no bags at all!
Try and keep the flexi pipe to a minimum its a real flow restricter....................................................................

I bought that dusty at the brizzy www show and what you are wanting to do is similar to my plans, except im making a cyclone system out of 2 x 200 ltr drums. with the cyclone to separate the sawdust im planning to vent the outlet from the dusty through the side of the workshop without a bag at all. recent data posted on the forum indicates that adding a 30 micron bag to a 600 cfm dusty drops its fkow by about 1/3, so if i can do it without the bag attached i will, but with some chicken wire to prevent unwanted intrusion from flying wildlife.

I put my whole DC outside in a transparent polycarbonate enclosure.
I thought it would show up the dust but so far it doesn't look any different than they day I installed it, maybe its the Perth wind keeping it all nice'n'breezy.

Thanks guys. I posted those questions last night then started thinking (yeh, I know, I shouldn't do it 'cause it gives me headaches), these things are designed to suck not blow. But, I think I'm wrong about that being a problem. I can see what you mean about keeping the flexi-pipe to a minimum and having a larger diameter outlet pipe, will try to organise that. Working without a bag may be a problem as we get the occasional easterly that would blow the dust back into the shed as well as onto any freshly hung-out washing. I really don't get why women get so worked up when their washing gets covered in saw dust . But anyway, will probably give this a go. Worst comes to worst, can always change the system later.
Doug, are you happy with this little DC? Any problems such as excessive noise etc?
Grizz.
