dust extraction
Aust. Woodworker july/aug 07 has an article on a vortex chip seperator.
Whats the difference from a cyclone and whats more effective. I think I know the answer but want it confirmed please.
I have a GMC 1hp floor model dusty that Id like to convert into a cyclone but if the vortex works just as well.
Also when people are installing fixed dust extraction systems they talk about 100mm pipe I was thinking this to be storm water but that only comes in 75 & 90mm so what are folks using as pipe.I would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds

Tony,
I used 100mm Waste ( Sewer ) piping and that worked out well, as the end fittings for the pipe actually measured 97mm. Fitted up well with the flexible pipe that came with the dusty.

Hi Tonto
I have two barrels (one from each line) in the system with my 2hp dusty and I get very little dust. I get very very very little dust in the bag of my dusty with this setup.
See here for link;

These work similar to a vortex where the dust comes in at the side and swirls around dropping to the bottom.
A cyclone is technically better but I have got to say this set up is far cheaper, quicker and far easier to make.
cheers

Dazzler looking at your other thread how the stuff do the chips/dust/kids etc not get sucked straight out the outlet pipe. I thought the concept of the cyclone was to swirl the dust so that it fell down and only air was left to to be sucked up.
But from the looks of your vortex its a wonder that nothing gets pulled up the outlet pipe.
If this works and IAM not doubting you, no siree I brlieve what I see than why go to the effort of building cyclones.
And people thought this had all been done to death hahahaI would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds

Hey
As it gets sucked in it spirals around the inside of the drum. She is really just a big triton style bucket but with the advantage that the intake is on the side near the top and by using the 33deg angles it comes in and down.
It really does work .
I would empty the bucket at least three times before I would even think of touching the dusty bag. May not be as good if you are cutting mdf or similar but then again thats not woodwork.....thats zombi-poison-freak work .
So it really does swirl. I actually took the top off once and the stuff was swirling and I even found a little puppy with a "toto" badge on his collar doing laps in there.

A cyclone is more effecient than a separator and not that hard to make. The 1hp will also struggle. I used to have a separator and 1hp, but now I have adapted the cyclone and increased my intake improving the DC heaps. Check out my website www.dai-sensei.com if you are interested, it has a step by step and links to other DC sites.
