I think both those units actually have the same size Impeller (and same design) so with the same size motor running them that means the same CFM would apply. Manufacturers can rate them how they like it appears - no law saying different.

So, save your dollars and go for the cheap one OR go up to the big 3hp which has a bigger impeller and really make the Cyclone Suck!!!

I guess you could make it out of wood but it would be bloody hard. Have to get the curves perfect and then sand it down to a mirror finish. Would not last either due to the abrasive effects of the dust flow imho.

Wayne, yes the 3HP could probably suck a golf ball through a garden hose. However with the 2HP at $369 and the 3 at $999 and pulling it to bits after the warranty runs out its a lot of $$ for 1 extra pony. Still cant figure out how they can claim 2 different rates and prices for the same HP rating.

The economy 3hp D/C is now $499 (http://svc010.bne011i.server-web.com....html?cache=no) and is rated at 1900cfm *.

I nearly got one of these for my Cyclone BUT it is rated at 9.5amps (from memory) so I was a bit concerned about my 10amp circuit being a bit lacking. Tempting though at only $130 more.

I also just noticed that the 'Pro' 2hp ($569) is actually rated the same as the 'Economy' ($369) one - 1200cfm * on the web site. Did you get that 1700cfm out of their catalog? Probably a misprint if so.

My view on the difference between the 2hp models - none really. The 'Pro' models are supposed to be a better motor but I have my doubts.

Thanks Wayne but I have the same problem of power as you so I will stick to the 2HP.

I intend to start out with the DC as it is untill the warranty runs out and can find someone to do the soldering ( no way I'm going to mess about with it myself). I there any advantage to using 6" PVC ducting as it is or wait till I get around to making a cyclone.

I hear you - one day I'll get a real shed and make sure it has tons of power available - maybe even 3 phase (I guy can dream).

As for the 6" PVC - yep - the 2hp Bag D/C will run them fine and much better than 4". Actually, the 6" will provide more suck on the bag D/C compared to the Cyclone - well initially. That is until the bags get even a bit clogged up (ie something like 20 minutes into using it) and then the suction will drop down progessively. That is one of the main reasons for a Cyclone - not suction drop.

btw The reason that the Bag one will have more suck initially than the Cyclone is that Cyclones need some air power to run so, therefore, they are not quite as powerful as a clean, new Bag D/C.

Here are the pics as promised - As you can see the inlet and outlet go through the lid for convenience in removing the drum and emptying. The dust collecter is immediately to the left of the drum.

Wayne, If you can expose the bottom of the fan blade, and make the opening to the cyclone as big as possible, it will improve your performance tremendously.

It looks like there is only a 4 in outlet between the top and bottom, and that will limit the CFMs.

Look at the 1st Image, it shows how the fan is totally exposed to the rest of the cyclone.

Oh lordy, Waynes turned green.... That, Jack, is one nice set up. I particularly like the filter set up on the exhaust. Remote control too, judging from hte second shot....

Got Plans? Did any of this need to be done by a proffessional (wiring etc)? That is, assuming that you are not a prof yourself , of course.

In photo one, whats the squirt on the roof? Homage paid to the god of sharp metal edges?

Using x10 for my remote control. Good eye there.

As for the red stuff on the ceiling, I have no idea what it is, but I think its just paint.

Didn't need a pro to do the wiring, Re-used all the wiring from my old Jet DC-1200 Dust Collector and bought a 10 foot long extentsion cord, cut off the end, to replace the shorter cord that was on it before.

Very nice - I think I have seen your cyclone before - do you have a web site.

As for opening up the Blower Inlet - yep - I do intend to and have done a trial run with it enlarged but I was worried about the motor overdrawing amps and burning out so I put the standard cover plate back on for the time being. I have a amp tester but have not had time to try/test it properly. When I did try it, the suction was incredible! I have a few days off soon and the kids are going to Grandma's so I might be able to try/test it then.

I think you can actually get 15 amp power points. Need a separate circuit though, but even a 10 amp on separate circuit would do. Depends how keen you are.
