Thread: Dust extraction extra pipes?

Hi Delbs

A lot of people use standard pvc water pipe for ducted dust extraction systems. I'm currently in the throes of planning mine and that's what I intend to use. Pop over to the dust extraction sub forum and you will find a wealth of info on other peoples set ups.

Ah PVC pipe is it? So hanging down from the roof trusses i just get all the 90degree angle pipes, and the right size to fit my machines dust output? I didnt expect to hear pvc as i thought it may be too hard to work with? with glue to keep it all in place? I somehow imagined a more flexible piping with the clamps etc

Im open to any suggestions, keen to see what other people have as their setup

If you want to save a few $ use PVC storm water as opposed to DWV (sewage) PVC pipe. Although DWV is a bit stronger than storm water pipe the pressures generated by Dust extractors are not high enough to required the use of DWV. Some places will stock mainly DWV pipe and fittings as stocking both requires a lot of space.

BTW I would definitely not glue them but use gaffer tape instead. If you want to modify them of get a blockage glue becomes a right PITA.

Are you planning to locate your DC outside?

There you should find various options for connectors, flexipipe, etc.

With regards the PVC pipe setup most would use rigid pipe for permanent/semiperm installs while using a minimal amount of flexi piping, perhaps going from rigid piping to machine for example. Also try minimising the number and joins such as T's and bends. Where you need bends try to make them as smooth as possible, e.g. using a 45deg bend instead of a 90deg bend.

I think Gareth means used 2 x 45º for one 90º.

I want to find what lengths they sell it in and diameters because i want to run it through out the roof trusses with a few t-junctions or 3 splitters back to the unit.

I want to do this so i dont need to run piping from one machine to another when i use it. If the piping was setup permanently that would be nice

Anyone know where on the carbatech wensite they sell these? Or another site..

Not a silly question at all. We all start as novices.

I got my 150 mm PVC stormwater pipe and fittings from Total Eden. They were 40% cheaper than any of the plumbing supplies.

I note Total Eden don't have a store in Canberra, but you might try irrigation suppliers. Here in Brisbane the irrigation stores are generally far cheaper than the plumbing suppliers. Worth checking out.

Installed my ductwork in recent months. The PVC is very easy to use. Most joints are only taped with plastic duct tape. Joints that bear weight are held with a couple of 9mm self tappers as well. The only glue I used was for a lobster-back 90 degree bend I made to optimise air flow through the main line (six 15 degree elbows glued together). See pic.

Talk to BobL about the duct design before you start. There are plenty of silly mistakes that are easy for a novice to make ... that's experience talking.

Anyone had a look or tried this 6" HD PVC hose?

So i am thinking if i just start off a 3 way splitter (like this Rockler 3-Way Dust Collection Junction : CARBA-TEC) from the DC unit in the corner, run PVC storm water piping throughout the roof truss and down down from the roof truss to wherever my 3 machines are.

Then i was thinking of leaving a bit of room in between my machine and the PVC pipe and running the flexi pipe right to the machines

Oh also the DC will just be located in the corner of the workshop. Floor layout is 6M wide x 8M Length so i shouldnt need to place it outside just yet

Why do I doubt that? Perhaps $30 per metre, Caraba tech sells 150 mm flexy at $33 per metre.

Avoid that 3 way splitter like the plague. the inside diameter is less than 4 inches, and that size pipe will choke your air flow.

What kind of dust collection unit are you using? If it has enough suction, 6 inch pipe is the way to go to give you workable volume and velocity, especially to grab the very fine dust. (BobL is our resident guru for dust collection; do seek his advice on duct design). Usually, it is best to run a main line through the shop and to drop down to each machine off that line. A couple of pics of my set-up below.

I have a single overhead line coming off the cyclone, with 5 collection points (soon to be a sixth).

All of this is academic until we know what size dust collector you are using.

Mate your setup is exactly what i want to duplicate, that looks great! Is it much louder running the DC ontop of the noise of your TS or jointer or thicknesser?

Also, i am getting that Carbatech unit for $200, if you guys can suggest a better more efficient unit than the carbatech model then please say so as this is all still in the design phase no money has been laid out yet. My budget would be up to $400 or so id say

I'd go higher HP if possible, could you get hold of an inexpensive 3hp unit?
