    Default Dust extraction fittings

    G'day all,

I put my dust extractor together last weekend - the machine looks good, sounds good and seems to work well. Now it's time to put all the ducting together. I have a couple of lengths of 100mm flexible duct that came with the kit, plus a bunch of things like v's, flow gates, etc. I also have a short length of 100mm stormwater pipe to do some testing.

Funny thing is that the flexible pipe is supposed to be 100mm and this fits over the fittings neatly so you can put the band clamps on. But the 100mm stormwater pipe is a good bit bigger. I can actually put the flexible pipe inside the stormwater pipe and there's still a few millimetres of play. Is this normal?

If so, how do you normally attach the stormwater pipe to either the flexible pipe or the fittings? Can you just stuff one into the other and run some duct tape around the join?

Is there any issue with shavings etc getting caught inside the pipework if one fitting is 5-10 mm narrower than the other and the overlap goes against the airflow?

    Cheers,
    Adam

Hi Adam, it's an issue for everybody. There are some suggestions here.

With my shed i stuffed the hose inside the pipe when the flow was in that direction and at the DC end when the stuff came from the pipe into the hose i slit the end of the pipe in 6 places (along the pipe for about 50mm) placed a hose clamp around it to close it up, slid the hose over it then moved the clamp around the hose and taped it as well. That way the dust always goes from smaller to larger eliminating any "catches"

    Hope that helps

    Cheers

    Hi Adam

There is some really useful and detailed information on the design and construction of dust extractor systems on Bill Pentz's website at http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/index.cfm

    G'day Chumley,

The easiest way to solve your problem is to use the fitting I located in early 2006 - Follow the link

    http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...881#post264881

If you use these then you will never need to use tape or fillers and the extra bonus is that it only takes seconds to disconnect from one machine and then to connect to another should you choose to do so.

    Regards,
    Bob

    Thanks everyone who replied.
I'll take some time to check out the links and go from there.
    Cheers,
    Adam
