Default Dust extraction or lack there of

    Hello everyone,

I finally took the plunge and upgrade the triton 2000 series and got a new 3hp table saw. I love the new was buy unfortunately due to old wiring in the shed it can't currently handle the saw and dust extraction. I will be upgrading the electrical but I blew the budget so it might not happen for a few months.

Obviously ill be wearing a respirator but will there be any other things I should consider before using the saw without any dust collection? I did this for years with the triton but know its not really apples with apples.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

So let me get this straight, you have a dust extractor and a table saw but can't run them off the shed power supply at the same time?
I presume you have tried doing this and the circuit breaker opens immediately due to start up currents, or do they run for some time and eventually drop out?

    What HP DC is it?

Depending on the DC HP you might try starting the saw first and then the DC. To reduce the DC start up current try putting a blast gate on the intake at the DC and start it with the gate closed. It sounds counter intuitive but the mot should require less current to get it started.

If you can't afford the electrical upgrade maybe you can still afford some bathroom exhaust fans to at least vent some of the fine dust out of your shed?

You'r house will have more than one circuit for power outlets. Can you not run an extention lead for the dusty until you get the shed power redone.

Thanks for all the quick replies and good suggestions. I should have been a little clearer in my original post about some details.

As I've been using a triton I only have a shop vac. A family friend did a cashie for some electrical work I needed on the weekend and tested the power in the shed and due to the old wiring he said it couldn't handled the 3.7kW/17A required to run the new table saw and the 2HP dust collector I'm looking to get from carbatec.

Will 100% be doing the electrical upgrade but as the shed is at the back of the property its going to be more than I want to spend right now (as I over spent on the table saw and still need to buy the carbatec dust collector).

I think running the extension cord for now will definitely do the job though! I guess I was just checking if I ran the saw without any dust collection it wouldn't cause any issues with the saw etc.

No DC on the saw will only be messy just remember to shovel out the base frequently. If you have some hard to cut wood that pinches the blade check and empty the sawdust as hot embers can be produced by the friction between the wood and blade. They can smoulder for hours in a pile of dust in the saw. It doesn't happen often but it can and it will get your attention. You already plan to wear a mask. You should consider saving your bucks a little longer and get a 3hp DC with a 14"/355mm impeller. Moves more air to capture the fine dust. Lots of explanations throughout the forum as to why. You have homework until you get the new DC.

I suppose running a portable generator for extra power is out of the question?

I agree that given your sparkies advice about old wiring using an extension cord from another house circuit would be the safest bet.

If the wiring is indeed in poor shape you might even have been lucky so far as there's actually not a lot of difference between a triton and a shop vac , and a 3HP TS and a 2HP DC.
Using motor power ratings alone a triton is maxed at about 2000W and a shop vac is about 1200W so you would have been around 3200W MAX when using those two
    A 3HP TS is 2400W and a 2HP is ~1500W so 3900 W all up.
However, it is very unlikely both the triton and shop vac will have been using their full power unless they are both fully loaded.
The same applies to a 3HP TS and a DC which would normally only draw about 2400W in total when making light cuts.

Something to be aware of is that a stock 2HP still comes up short in terms for dust collection for a machine like a 3HP TS.
The main issue is the use of only of 4" ducting.
Have a look at the sticky on the top of the Dust forum to see how to modify it to use 6" ducting which makes a big difference in the amount of dust it will extract..
The other issue is DC location, as all DCs leak so you really want them outside the shed or enclosed inside an air tight enclosure inside your shed and vented outside.

Im currently only using a Ryobi wet/dry vac on my Carbatec TS. I have capped off the 4" port and only using the standard 32mm hose.

It collects a decent amount of the chips and a little dust. I always wear a respirator.

My shed is currently only wired with 2x double GPO's and they are fed from the same 16A circuit. I turn the vac on first and then the saw and you can noticeably hear the vac drop in power during saw start up.

Shed will get an electrical upgrade when I knock down the adjacent house and rebuild but for now it works and prevent 95% of the dust spilling onto the floor.

Thanks for all the great replies. I will be doing a bit of reading on dust collection and might save up for something else or wait to see off anything pops up on gumtree.

I actually use the ryobi wet dry shop vac so I might see how that goes if it's worked well for you. I'm still getting into woodworking and don't yet have a jointer or thickness planer so besides the bandsaw it's the only real dust collection I need right now.

    Appreciate all the help!
