This should give you a rough idea.

Thanks, Craig. Those prices were a tad better than what I was expecting.

Given that Jefferson has a mate in sheet metal, he might do even better.

    Cheerio!

    Yes, John, all very confusing.

Here are some of the steel prices:

    2m x 200mm spiral steel pipe = $43

    2m x 150mm pip - $32

    joiners, 200mm and 150mm - $5 and $4

    wyes, 200mm and 150mm - $35.49 and $28.58

45 degree elbows (the 90s appear to be R1 - bad?) - 200m and 150mm - $11 each, also in R1 so I suspect I will have to cut some pipe to get the turn better.

    What else?

    150mm blast gates $68

    200-150 reducers $16

poly pipe 203mm (so it slips straight over the pipe) 42.5 per metre, 152mm,$29.70 pm.

I haven't compared prices with PVC but I think I can wear the above prices. Apparently very easy to snap together and comes with hangers (extra).

How do you think that compares to PVC?

Craig beat me to the punch.

It's was the Micronair prices I was quoting.

Bob L's comment elsewhere about dead spots may mean I have to install a new window or move the VL 300.

    Jefferson,

About a year ago I paid the following for 150 mm PVC stuff:
    1. 6m lengths pipe $48.36 (Steel is $112 for 6 M, incl GST)
    2. 45 degree bend F:F $12.46 (Steel is $38.50 incl GST)
    3. Wye Junction F:F:F $18.50 (Steel is $141 incl GST)

Current 225 mm PVC prices are:

    • 225 mm Pipe ... $133 per length. (Steel is $148.5 incl GST)
    • 225 mm 45 Bend ... $40 (Steel is $39.6 incl GST)
    • 225 mm 90 Bend ... $42 (Steel is $39.6 incl GST)
    • 225 mm to 150 mm wye ... $133. Steel is $167 incl GST for a 225 X 225 mm Wye)

Steel and PVC seem pretty close for the 200/225 mm stuff, but PVC seems far cheaper for the 150 mm stuff. Do your own price check, but if these prices apply in your area, PVC (from Total Eden) looks like a less expensive option, especially if the main (8-9") duct has significantly fewer fittings than all the 6" ducts combined, which is the case in my shop.

I got a bit anal with my one and only 90 degree bend in the main duct, see pic. I used six 15 degree bends glued together, giving me a R/D of about 3.5. You can tell I was keen to minimise losses there.

Losses in 8" duct (at 1,500 to 1,600 CFM) from 45 and 90 fittings is slightly lower than in 6" duct (at 1,000 CFM), but it seems worth thinking about using wide radius bends in the main line.

Contact Shedman for blast gate prices ... I think he will do far better that the price you mentioned. They are all likely to be 150 mm.

    Cheerio!

John, thanks for the pricing comparisons. The best PVC price we can get locally is from Reece Plumbing and they are doing no favours.

I haven't seen the outlets etc for the Max but assume 200mm will perfect. And I will need quite a few wyes and 200-150 reducers for the droppers.

I think the best thing for me to do is strip the shed out and make some hard decisions about lathe and bandsaw placements first. Still attracted to steel in spite of the $.

I got a quote from Reece ... and left reeling from the shock. How unreasonable of Total Eden to be no closer than Essendon.

As someone who was a plumber in a previous life, I am more comfortable with the PVC, but it's your shed. You can get 8" PVC wyes that have a 6" take off at 45 degrees, but I assume something similar can be done in steel. At any rate, once you have drawn up an outline design costing the components will be easy.

    Cheerio!

    John
