I had a very loud extractor until I fitted the Muffler that came with it . It surprised me how well it worked . Here's a picture of it . Its mostly just a single skin thin Galvanized sheet metal part that bolts on . Making something like it in masonite or MDF should be fine for inside a room. I'm sure it could be improved as well by adding more to it probably.

Its just a rectangular tube on the inside except in the vertical section the walls step out and the two step out sections are filled with some sort of fiberglass insuwool looking stuff (Behind the dotted red lines) and are covered by a skin of the same Galvanised sheet, but its perforated with many fine holes . Around 2mm I think and maybe about 15 or 20mm apart. Not exactly sure but I could look again . What do the holes do ? Break up the bouncing sound ? I don't know, and would just bird wire be as good ? Exposing more of the wool ? Maybe .
So its double skinned either side of the wool material but the rest is single skin Gal sheet . I would imagine doing it all double skinned and having the wool on four sides would be better.

That 90 degree bend in the top section(Red line ) has a curved piece of Gal sheet to ease the flow around the internal corner.

If you went down to the ground and back up to the top with a home made duct cabinet like this attached to the end wall surrounding the Felder that doesn't restrict the flow Id think you could vent it outside and no one would hear it .

You might not be able to put the unit outside but as Bob or someone else here is going to start telling you, venting it outside is the next best thing from that for your lungs .

FWIW A muffler will only work on a cyclone.

If you have to house your DC inside your shed build a sound reducing cupboard inside the shed and put the DC inside that and then if possible vent the cupboard outside the shed.

Plenty of examples in the Dust forum.

If you cannot vent the DC outside let the DC vent back into the shed and use forced ventilation to remove escaped fine dust.
Use exhaust fans that generate 20 room changes per hour.

Thank you Auscab for your informative detailed reply. I have since searched web and found a company that builds custom size Mufflers and sent them email on there specs. I think its an excellent idea. Hopefully they will get back to me this week.

Thank you Bob for your advice. I have been through so many previous posts on this Forum today and gained much more knowledge. I believe it was you that said (if I build an enclosed compartment inside shed) I need a vent twice the size of my inlet which was what I needed to know. I will vent it outside. Unfortunately I couldn't look at photos as they don't work any more I suppose they are too old but not to worry I think I have enough info now.
