I've told the best about you to everyone I know who has anything to do with woodworking/metal/leather. All the hours you put in here and how you try to find solutions for everybody even though you don't really have to.

Bob, whats the etiquette for collecting stainless clothes dryer drums from the side of the road? Do you grab the whole machine, disassemble and then get rid of the unused bits, or do you attack it on the side of the road and extract the drum there?

That was a great presentation Bob. Thanks for doing it, and being happy for it to be made available to the broader public. A good long form discussion such as that allows you to delve into some of the "oh, and" stuff that may seem inconsequential on its own, but does help to fill in some gaps in understanding.

I used to park my van as close as possible to the heap by the side of the road and quickly grab the whole dryer and take it home and dismantle it and then if it was not too far sneak back and put the remains back on the same heap. These days I leave the remains in the back of my van and next time I drive past the council recycling yard (its on the way to the supermarket) I drop the remains off at the white goods recycling drop off point as there's no charge for locals. I have about 1/2 dozen of the drums stashed under the house so I have had to stop collecting.

I take a lot of stuff from these heaps. One appliance that requires dismantling is extracting the heat resistant silicone wiring from stoves. I use this wiring in converting 3P motors from Y to ∆. I usually do that in situ. Its fine with most people provided you don't leave a mess.

A thank you to the Mens Shed of WA for putting the video up where non members like myself can watch it. Also thank you Bob for taking the time to talk about your dust stuff. Shame about the video breaking up here and there but the gist of it is in it and someone can research further if they need to. Hint. It's all over these pages.

If you want a suggestion on a topic how about a quick one on Dust Measurements Correctly. Particle counting, static pressures and airflow. Should be easy and only take two or three hours. It would let people understand how far off readings can be when done with the wrong instruments or incorrect methods. Also all the subjective goodies like "It feels stronger" and "Looks like it is better now" and other golden oldies might be reduced a little. Another would be making sense of the airflow claims of dust collector manufacturers / sellers and what you can realistically expect along with what is actually needed.

I gave a semi technical talk at a Mens shed convention a couple of years ago in front of about 80 people and as soon as I threw in a few things about particle counting and air flow I could see the audience glazing over so I have learned to dole that out sparingly.

Well, given the below average video production aspects, one thing I was not banking on was the level of interest the video would spark amongst the men's shed community. Today I have had 3 phone calls and 2 emails requesting help on dust extraction from local mens sheds so looks like i'm going to be busy over the next few weeks. Just don't want this turning into a full time thing.
