    We might have to organize an onsite visit and demonstration of the new dust collectors at both Andy's and Russell's;
    they'll only be 20-30 mins drive between them.

    My exhaust is 8 inch and my inlet is 6 inch. The cross sectional areas are 201 and 113 sq inches respectively, so the exhaust is not quite double the inlet, but it works just fine. The CV is designed with an 8 inch outlet ... that will work.

    Ok, so I have done some more research and I think I know what I'd like to do with dust extraction in my workshop.

    I'll have the cyclone (CV) in an enclosure. Now my understanding is the loudest part is the exhaust which is connected to the filters (yes I'm going filters over venting outside, it's just not feasible for me). This may sound like overkill, but if I was to enclose the exhaust and filters using sound absorbing materials, then have an enclosure for the whole unit, would this somehow hinder the performance keeping in mind I will allow for air flow?

    Also, how much noise is generated through the ducting? If I was to wrap sound absorbing/proofing materials around the ducting, would I see a big enough difference to actually being worthwhile?

    Thanks!

    Andy

    From my experience I would say that there is not much noise generated in the ducts so it is unlikely that the effort will be worthwhile.

    Nearly all the noise comes from the impeller and the exhaust. The muffler I built and the sound batts around the impeller reduced the noise by 22 decibels. It is now at a level that makes working in the shed OK.

    Thanks, I thought that would be the case.

    Do you have any issues with heat build up or performance from the insulated box that encloses the exhaust and impeller?

    Cheers

    There is no issues with performance because the sound materials do not interrupt the air flow in any way. Go to the Corrimal Mens shed site to see how the muffler is constructed. The principles are the same on mine I just used different materials to keep the costs down. There is virtually no heat generated in the impeller casing or the exhaust system. The only source of heat is the motor but I have left that uncovered so it remains quite cool

    Thanks for posting the links.

    Do you think they could reduce the noise even further if they insulated the transition box from the cyclone to the muffler? Or would the muffler alone absorb most of the noise?

    Cheers

    My transition is 229mm flexi pipe wrapped with Bradford Sound Bats which did reduce the noise. How much I do not know because I forgot to take a reading before the work.

    My experience is the same as Safari's. I pulled insulation right up to and over the blower. That helped.
