Thread: Dust Extractor auto start-on power

I went through a search a little time ago and the only options were very expensive.

The best so far is the Kambrook remote control power system. You have a remote for your pocket. It handles up to 15 amps startup, so it won't blow when your DC starts. I've tried other remotes and they can't handle the initial draw....ffzzzzttttt pop!

It's also only single phase, but it can control a large number of devices remotely.

Switching a DC on when starting the power tool is fine BUT if you wish to maximise fine dust control he DC should not be switched of when the power tool is switched off. Instead the DC should be left running for some time afterwards. The length of time the DC should be left running is , shed size, job type, and DE setup dependent.
Eg
1hp system 4" ducting with any machine or power tool even in a small shed. Leave DC running until you leave the shed.
4hp cyclone, 6" ducting with low dust making activity, leave DC running for two minutes after stopping machine or power tool. For significant dust making activity then around 10 minutes is needed for a large shed and less for a small shed.
Generally more is better than less.

in practice for most jobs this turns into leaving the DC on for the duration of a job session. So what we really need is something that turns a DC on when a power tool or machine is started but not off.

the remote that's offered in the US, doesn't stop the DC when power tool is switched off.
There's a few second delay after the power tool has been stopped.

May be a little off topic but I use a remote switch available from jaycar - meant for tvs etc but handles my 2hp dust collector not worries. Just works with a remote so not on machine start up however its was only $25 and is very handy! http://www.jaycar.com.au/Power-Produ...utlet/p/MS6145

I've got those remotes now.

The one I'm using is Arlec and it's crap.

Often doesn't turn on or off. It's very temperamental.

Fair enough, mine works really well but I'm mostly within view of it so nothing to block the signal

Does it ever require you to press several times, because the damn thing won't register the signal?

Mines pretty consistent, i think it works almost every time. Its never been an issue so have not really taken noticed of it. Also ive only been using it for around 3 months so will see how it works in the long run!

After investigating auto-switching powerboards etc I discarded them as they didn't have the current rating for either my tablesaw or DE, so this is what I did for my workshop.

My first version used a Kemo module that would handle a total current of 16A (master and slave output) so I needed to trigger the slave output via a relay in order to leave enough current rating to handle the startup currents. I wasn't happy with it - there was a lot of relay chatter and there wasn't much adjustment possible for the run-on time for the DE. So I bit the bullet and bought this module which is great. It was expensive (~$130 at the time), mine came from Fantech but it's made by Powerform in Sydney.

I connected the output to a run-on timer module and relay to switch the DE. This was made easy by the inclusion of a 12VDC supply available onboard. The knob on the RHS adjusts the run-on time. There are 2 leads for the power in, the first supplies the 15A GPO at the top for my TS and thicknesser, the lower one is just for the DE. On the lower GPO the top switch is irrelevant (it is manufactured as part of the socket) and the separate switch allows me to turn on the DE directly. Ignore the earth wire at the top - when I built it I thought it was a good idea to have an exposed earth wire running through the ducting but I don't use it.

The unit works very well, but I will need to modify it when I connect my new 3PH DE/cyclone. I'll keep the same run-on timer but instead of a 240V relay it will have to control 3PH )

I second Evan's suggestion. Since Ev showed me that trick, it has made everything so much easier. None of this 'can't be bothered turning on the dusty for one cut' rubbish. I bought a set from Aldi a year ago or longer and I wish I set it up ages ago. I've now added it to my ducted vac and it makes a big difference.

Yeah.. don't get one of the wall plug remote switches they are meant for tvs, lamps for example...

I have one of these for the dusty and it works great. 30A so load and start load are not an issue, works from down the road....

Pretty cheap too at under $25... and mounts easy direct to the wiring box on the side of the motor...

Jaycar used to sell these Kemo M103N Master Slave Switch 230 V AC 400 V AC Made IN Germany | eBay and they work great for the Master/Slave configurations if thats what you need.

I have one of these Master/Slave relays in mint unused condition if anyone is interested free for pickup in Sydney, pm me?

I found the manual remote control a better option for me...

Another alternative I have used in the past is to rig a cheap remote like this DC 12V 10A Relay 1CH Wireless RF Remote Control Switch Transmitter Receiver | eBay
to a solid stare relay that can handle the startup current, like Solid State Relay Module SSR 25DA 25A 250V 3 32V DC Input 24 380VAC Output LU | eBay for the dusty.... I ran this config for a few years but it does require a small 12v powersupply for the receiver board....
