dust extractor which one to buy
hello all and thanks for any advice, looking at installing a dust extractor for my shed. the plan is to put the extractor out side in a small but vented garden shed. my plan was then to use either 100mm or 150mm pipe external to the shed and bring it in through the wall in 2 or 3 places.. the longest run would be around 10m for my sliding compound saw and around 6 to 7m for my jointer and thicknesser.. so in general there would be only one port used at a time.. the dusty i was looking at getting was the carbatec fm 300.. it is a 2hp and approx 1400cfm...
am i pushing my luck and the distance of the run with this unit??? most of the work is creating fine dust from saws and sanding..
i'm also planning on making a seperator to be placed before the dusty to help things along..
has anyone got or used this dusty, would it have enough suction over that distance, salesman wouldn't commit to a answer... they are on sale at the moment so want to get in and save some cash while i can...
thanks again Sean

Hi Sean,
I am currently installing a dust extraction system myself.
If I was you I would like at the system from Machinery Warehouse (Hafco brand).
They have a 2300 cfm unit 3 Hp listed at $517 I think you will get better results from this.

I bought one of the Hafco W329 3HP twin bag extractors from Machinery House in Dandenong a month ago. No doubt it is cheap and cheerful, but it does have some issues from my POV. Harbor Freight sells the exact same dust extractor, of course with different branding, and a 110v 60hz motor, in the USA. The manuals are the same apart from Machinery House's editing to comply with Australian standards. Harbor Freights part number: 98872-AAX there is a direct link on their product page to the manual.
Be aware its claimed 2300 CFM is with no ducting or BAGS in place. It is a 12" impeller driven by a 3hp motor. With clean bags in place and no ducting the motor is drawing no more then ~1200 watts. I've yet to start experimenting with inlet modifications.
The welds are so bad in the paper thin ducting that there are leaks, 5 minutes with some silastic will fix it, but talk about zero QC.
The bolts included for assembly have got to take the award for the lowest quality i've seen this year. Heads off center to the thread, but it is a stretch to call it a thread.
My w329 will soon be donating its motor and impeller for a Bill Pentz cyclone.

Sean,
I would go for the 3HP if you can afford it, try and keep your runs as short as possible.
I'm not sure if you have already seen this but there is heaps of great info worth reading here Bill's Cyclone & Dust Collection Research
You wont be disappointed, I built a Bill Pentz cyclone back in 2006 and it really works well.Regards
Al .
You don't know, what you don't know, until you know it.
