    Default Dust Extractor Height Problem

    Hey guys,

    Just a quick question.

I have just bought a new dusty and after reading lots of info about the ideal setup i have decided i want to locate the dusty out in my garden shed which is right next to my shed rather than have it in the workshop.

The only problem with this is the height of the dusty is too tall for the garden shed by about 300mm.

I can save a bit of height, maybe 100mm, by modifying the frame the dusty sits on but still not enough for both the filter bags and the sawdust bags to extend fully when the dusty is on.

I assume the filter bags need to extend fully to operate properly but my question is will it affect how well the dusty works if the bags underneath are sitting on the ground, not fully inflated?

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Ben

What sort of bags are they?
If the bottom one is plastic you can just fold it up so it is shorter by 300 mm. Of course you will need to empty it more often but you should never wait till the bags fill up anyway.
If they are both cloth you will lose a bit of flow when the bag is empty but in that case I would convert the system to use a shorter plastic bottom and a Needlefelt or PF top.

    Alternatively you could
    - raise the height of the garden shed
    - What sort of floor have you got? If it is just concrete slabs or paving what about lowering the floor inside the garden shed - just the area where the plastic bag needs to site. ie inset a plastic rubbish bin into the ground and leave a decent lip above the ground so it won't collect water.

What sort of DC is it?

Thanks for the quick response Bob.

The garden shed is on a poured slab so digging out the inside isn't an option and raising it would too much work on top of everything else but thanks for the suggestions.

Hanging the bags (plastic) shorter seems like the go if it wont affect performance.

The dusty is the carbatec 2HP twin (CT-002VB-1PH). I would have liked to have gone bigger but i was limited with power.

I will post pics of the set up once its all done (this could be a while).

    Cheers

That's the one with two pair of bags (two needlefelt bags) - reducing the size of the plasctic bags will be no probem
I have the 3HP version and have lost about 100 mm in plastic bag height.

That's a good unit but the 1927 CFM rating is not realistic, but it will draw pull up to 1200 cfm through a 6" pipe with clean bags.
If you can do it, ditch the 3 x 4" connector on the top of the impeller and run a 6" main into your shed.
From there take it to as many machines as you can using 6" pipe or multiple 4" pipes to each machine.

    Thanks for the advice Bob.

Already hunting around for 6" fittings on ebay/gumtree etc. Managed to get 30 x 45 deg elbows and 10m of pipe (and about 30 x 90's which i wont be using) for $275. Not a bad start.

Will be taking your advice and BP's on how to set up correctly.

My only concern will be the longest run i will be running could be up to 12m. Might lose a bit of suction but my hands are tied until i can work out a better solution.

    No worries

If you can offload the 90's a put the cash towards Y's you'll be just about set.

One minor place the 90s can be used with minimal loss are as couplers for 6" to 4" ducting.
    The way this is normally done is;
    6" Duct : 6" F-F coupler : 6" - 4" invert : 4" duct.
However the flow limiting component here is the 4" duct, so using a 6" 90 F-F bend will not make a lot of difference.
However, this is an unlikely situation since if you connect anything with 4" ducting you should really use multiple 4" connects. This means using a Y with a 6" F connections at both ends and a 4" 45º side take off. Then use a 6" - 4" invert on one of the 6" F connections.

Will be taking your advice and BP's on how to set up correctly.
    Happy to help.

If it is a straight run it shouldn't be too bad.

    Ben,

I bought my pipe and fittings from Total Eden for about 40% less that the plumbing suppliers were charging. I don't know where you are, but if you don't have a Total Eden locally, try the irrigation suppliers. Sometimes they are significantly cheaper than the plumbing suppliers.

    Thanks Bob,

I am aiming to run 6" to the machines although once i get into it i may change and run 2 x 4" or whatever seems best per machine.

    Thanks John,

I do have a total eden in Geelong although i have been quoted very good prices (i think) from Tradelink. Does $16.50 ea for the y's and $55 per 6m length seem reasonable. I thought it was good as i have haggled a fair bit to get those prices.

I will be waiting to see what i can get second hand until i am ready to go, then whats left by new.

    Thanks for the help guys.

    Ben

Thats a good price, I bought a length of 6" from tradelink at hoppers crossing for about $70. Hopefully that will be all the 6" pipe I will need because I run just one line from the cyclone to the machine and all the machines are on wheels and are put away when not the one/s in use at the time. About half of the 6m will be used for the trunk line and the rest will be used on the machinery creating ports to plug into the main line.

    Ben,

Those prices sound pretty good to me. I paid $48.36 per 6M length and $18.50 ea for the wyes (plus GST). 45 degree bends were about $12.50 ea.

Before you get too much further advanced, may I suggest you sit down and draw up a plan for the ductwork? Then post it here so BobL can cast a critical eye over it. That way you won't find yourself re-doing something after all the ductwork is up.

I got lucky and had to make only very minor modifications after the ductwork was up. Others have not been so fortunate. It can get ugly.

    I think i will John.

Hopefully I'm not too far off from that stage. I'm actually enjoying the shop fit out just as much as making anything.

    Cheers
