Default Can this old Carbatec CT-2042 be modified?

    Hi everyone!,
I've had a good read through the generic 2hp dusty thread but I was wondering if there are any options for opening up the 125mm outlet on this carbatec CT-2042?

I know I can do the bell mouth front cover plate upgrade, but from what I've read the outlet size is the limiting factor here and as it's formed as part of the fan housing I'm not sure if much can be done.

If I rotate the motor and have the outlet go straight into the filter ring without flex-hose (or minimal flex) would it make much difference? By that I mean is it worth building a frame and modifying the stand to do it?

Behind my shed is a falling down lean-to that I'm planing on re-building and enclosing so I can put the dust extractor out there...when I can afford to

I've been using this dusty for almost 20 years now (it was a 21st birthday present) so I think I've done pretty well out of it so far

    All the best

    Josh

From what you've said in your post looks like you've done your pre-reading.

Yes on all fronts its worth doing. Any reduction in flexy ducting is an improvement in dust extraction.
On the other hand given the age of the DC, i'd question whether its worth making the upgrades on the current unit as its quite a painful (and finickly) process getting everything lined up and sealed.

So if it were me i'd get a new DC and make the mods to that

It depends on your metal working ability.
The inlet is easy to mod - easiest thing is to completely replace the inlet plate with a 6" - bell mouth inlet if you can..
The rounded outlet is not so easy.

If you were to cut the outlet off, back to the line shown here,

Then fabricate a rectangular replacement and follow the rest of the mod in the sticky it should be OK.
However fabricating a smooth transition would still be quite tricky and would not be as effective as an impeller housing with the fully formed smooth rectangular outlet.

I've had couple of these impellers pass though my hands but have unsold them as is because of this problem.

    Thanks tonzeyd and BobL!

I think I'll make the bell mouth inlet and lift and rotate the housing (to shorten the flex and get it closer the height I need) and then leave it at that for now. I feel like I have more chance of ruining the housing than improving it if I start cutting into it!

Long term plan is to have a 3hp unit (or Clearvue ) situated outside the shed so I'll keep using what I have until that happens.

    Cheers

    Josh

How big is your shed - maybe look to add some forced ventilation?

It's around 6m x 7m (not a very high ceiling though) and forced ventilation is definitely on the list too!

A very good candidate for forced ventilation
