Default Which dusty? 1HP, 2HP or 1HP with needlefelt?

    Hi Everyone,

Well, with the Sydney wood show only a few sleeps away, I'm trying to think about my purchases. And with only a small budget this year, I'm trying to decide which model of dust extractor I need.

It will be used mainly for the lathe and Ryobi thicknesser. The Triton router table and Workcentre are running pretty well off a shop vac and bucket. Only one device will be hooked up to it/operating at any time.

Looking at the Carbatec website (I haven't looked at H&F or Timbecon yet), I have 3 options.

    1hp extractor w.needlefelt bag 700cfm
    Sealed bearings
    1 dust port
    $379

    1hp economy 650cfm
    1 dust port
    $199

    2hp economy 1200cfm
    2 dust ports
    $319

    My questions are:

    1. Would a 1HP be sufficient for capturing dust while sanding on the lather, and sucking up the shavings from the thicknesser?

    2. If 1hp is enough, would I notice a difference between the 650cfm and 700cfm models? Also, is the needlefelt bag model of a better build quality?

    3. How loud are these models? Last year I walked past a dust extractor that was turned on, and it was very quiet.

At this stage, I don't plan for any permanent dust extraction, as the unit can sit between the thicknesser and the lather. Another option is to have the extractor outside my shed and have 3m hose to each machine (but would be nice but not essential).

    Thanks alot for your time!

    Cheers,
    Nathan.

    1. Yes probably. The thicknesser will need more pull than the lathe. If you are hooking the 1HP direct to the thicknesser with a short length of hose, it should cope ok.

    2. Probably not betweem 650 and 700. Needlefelt has a finer filter so less fine dust in the air.

    3. The larger the extractor, the more noisier. 2HP can be noisy in a smaller workshop. If mounted somewhere outside, it is less of a problem.

personally, I'd reccomend the 2HP model. If later you want to run collection pipes from machines, the 1HP models wont run terribly well. The 2HP is noisier, but you are going to have noise anyway so might as well have close to twice the sucking power as it will also allow you to use larger/wider collection accessories with more pull.

Thanks for the advice Dean. I'm now leaning towards the 2HP with the possibility of it being outside the shed....... although the 1HP would be much better on the budget which is limited at the moment. Decisions decisions!

Lets just say I was in the same boat, to choose between cheaper 1HP and more expensive 2HP unit.

I am very happy I chose the 2HP. I would have regretted buying the smaller unit.

I have the 1hp unit and I can tell you it is utterly useless on the thicknesser and the bandsaw and next to useless on anything except sanders.
If that's all you can afford, keep your money in your pocket.

    Look after your lungs
Get the one with the finer filter or one that can be fitted with an after market 3micron or better filter

I as well will vote for the 2HP version , worth the money and you should get a bit off due to the show.

    Mate,

Go for the 2hp as others have said. You can turn it into a Cyclone later

    Thanks everyone,

I'm now leaning heavily towards the 2HP. My only concern is the noise level of it. I guess I was attracted to the 1HP version as they are very quiet.

Are they loud enough that you need to wear ear muffs when they are running? As loud as a shop vac?

    Nathan.

I have a 1hp unit (Hafco), it does an excellent job on the bandsaw, great job on the GMC thicknesser (12") and works very well on the router table and the Triton WC2000.

I use 1 length of 4" flexible hose, and never have a problem.

Would like to get a 2hp eventually and have fixed ducts and a cyclone, but in the meantime I am happy with my 1hp.

Nathan, wouldn't you be wearing hearing protection anyway, with either the lathe or thicknesser?

    G'day Iwannashed,

Get the 2hp. it's noisy, but what's your health worth?

But, once you've put a 2nd stage 44gal drum on it or something similar it'll cut the noise by half. And as Pat has said, you'd be wearing hearing protection, without it and the Dusty and a thicknesser or anthing as noisy as it you'd be mad not to wear one.
I make things, I just take a long time.

I really didnt find the 2hp that noisy. Its a low loudish humm that is not annoying really. My Cyclone is now outside the shop so just about nothing now EXCEPT when i hit the wood on the TS/Sanders/Thicknesser/etc.

Maybe this will tip you over ........

    2HP !!

I had a 1HP and sold it after 6 months. Next to useless unless it was on one small pipe with no turns in it.
