Dusty without Filter
Just a quick question as the search didn't turn up any info.
I have a 1hp Carbatec dusty that I've got setup outside the shed and have been using for about 2 years. It has it's own mini-shed out the back. I noticed today that it works a whole lot better with the filter bag completely removed.
Is there any problem with running it without the filter?
So far the only thing I could think of would be that the fine dust is not really collected in the lower bag and could end up settling on the motor and creating a fire hazard.

What happens to all the large intermediate level dust - surely that just gets blown all over the place? Maybe its contained in the mini shed?
The only thing I can think of is when the motor has no or very little resistance on it, it will be drawing its max current so it will run hotter and then wear out faster.
Have you tried washing your bag?

Thanks for the reply Bob.
Most of the larger chips, shavings etc have still ended up in the bottom of the lower bag, there is definitely some ending up on the floor though. I might consider venting the top of the dusty directly out of the mini-shed. It backs onto bushland so shouldn't have any great effect on the neighbours.
I always thought that electric motors drew more current under greater load so a freewheeling motor once up to speed should use less power than one under a constant load. Not 100% sure on this though so I will keep an eye on the motor temp.
Haven't tried washing the bag either, should probably give that a go first and see how it performs.
Thanks again.

A dusty without any back pressure is the most load because its shifting more air.

Thanks guys,
Noticed a lot more chips and shavings on the mini-shed floor today so I beat the dust out of the filter bag and refitted it for now. Still need to give it a wash.
My power meter only showed about a 200mA difference in running current between bag on and bag off so I don't think it would have an appreciable effect on service life.

I think I might have answer to my problem If (mind you if) I get another 2hp dusty. That would mean Instead of running 20mt of pipe to one sytem I could get away with a lot less pipe and use each system as required. That way I allready have one 2hp and instead of making that redundent by getting a 3hp. Each system would be independant of each other. Your feedback appreciated.

20m of pipe is a big ask for even a 3HP so the closer you can get your DCs to the machines the better. As well as frictional losses due to length, leakages become a problem if you have lots of connections.
Bear in mind that neither the 1 or 2 HP will have the air speed FPM or volume speed CFM of a 3 HP unit. I started with a 1HP connected to a TS, then I bought 2 2HP units. I still have all 3 of these but now I'm in the process of installing a 3HP unit especially since I just more than doubled the size of my shed. The 2HP units have been moved to a factory site and attached to dedicated machines I have access to.
