    Default Air borne dust extraction

    Hi

Is there any evidence to support the theory that a roof mounted "whirly bird" (or similar device) will remove the air borne dust from the workshop?

The reported flow rates for whirly birds I have seen posted on the web range from ~140 cfm for a 300 mm diam unit (this is just a little more than a quality vacuum cleaner) to 4500 cfm for an 800 mm diam unit with a wind speed of 12 km/hr

I would not want to be venting a shed full of dust with a vacuum cleaner.

The next time I am down at the milling yard I will measure the air flow through the ones on my container as well as the ambient wind speed.

Of course the big problem with whirly birds is they only work while the wind is blowing.
They also require significant sized inlets at floor level equally spaced around the shed or all you will do is create air currents between the nearest opening and the whirlybird.

BobL many thanks for your response,

As the workshop is on a concrete slab floor, i.e. no floor vents, my guess is the whirly bird idea is not a good idea.

May go back to a downdraft table / work station idea?

They don'y have to be in the floor - they can be in the wall

What sort of DC were you think of powering that with?
