    Default Fan noises

I think I was asked about this informaton about my 1450 RPM/20" impeller fan.

I have used a noise meter app on the smart phone, in a quiet office its measures 40dB (office aircon, distant conversation and typing), in my garage its 30-35dB (quiet culdesac, no wind no rain)

when standing 3m from the fan, the measuring device 1.5m above ground(the motor is 1.5m above ground). the noise is 72-76dB.

my 7.5kw hydrovane compressor measures 69-73 dB when measuring 3 m from it.

my single phase combination machine measures 70-75 dB (saw, no load.)

The usual distance used by forum members is 1m from the motor/fan.

There are quite a few sound measurements of motors in this thread.

1440 motor should be quite a bit quieter than 2880 RPM motors
The motor fan noise can be a major contributor.

BTW the accuracy of free or budget smart phone dB apps is only about +/-4 dB so it's hard to compare two measurements over the internet because even a difference of 8dB between two phones may not be significant. Using the same phone means improved relative resolution is possible,

Thanks BobL. I think I may need a new dust extractor as the one I have is not strong enough.
