Finding bags for H and F dust extractor
I bought the 2 HP dust extractor from Hare and Forbes approx 6 years ago. The original bag that came with it is a cloth bag with a large hose clamp that is secured onto the dust extractor, the bag now has a large hole in it. I enquired about a replacement bag cloth or plastic and H and F tell me that none of their current bags will fit my model. Their advice get some industrial garbage bags and rig it up somehow. Anyone else have a similar dust extractor and what have you done when it's time to replace the bag?

I assume you are referring to the 30 micron bags?
If so, how big is the hole?
What about patching it with some stiff calico or even an a couple of thicknesses of old blanket.
Is the DC venting outside the shed?
If so then I would take trip to Spotlight and look through their linings and backings. I have looked amongst that lot several times and seen stuff I reckon would make a decent bag.

Planned obsolescence. Is it the top or the bottom bag? If its the top bag, you can patch it with some non-permeable cloth like the rubbery coated curtain lining. You will loose a bit of surface area but still have a functioning blower. For a bit more money, you could just measure the diameter of the fitting & get a non H&F cartridge filter - I suspect that H&F do have a cartridge filter that would fit but the saleman was too lazy to check the diameter or the various models to find the right one.
If its the bottom bag the choices are less. Basically you can patch the old bag. If you do not already have a cartridge type top filter using a plastic bag liner will really choke up your blower as the bottom bag is actually part of the air exhaust system.
Of course, measure the diameter of the blower fitting and compare it to the current offerings from H&F and Carbatec - again, I think you will find that there are a limited number of sizes being made & you will just need to do the mental heavy lifting so 'they' can take some money off you - if the bag is a bit big this should not be a problem, just use a bit of foam 'weather strip' around the rim where the bag clamps to stop any leaks caused by folds in the bag.

Thanks boys. It is the bottom bag, the diameter is 495 mm, the hole is about 300 mm long, the bag I think is 5 micron and the dust extractor is outside. Will I need special equipment to patch the bag?

Carbatec have replacement collection bags (plastic) for most of their models, which are basically the same as the H&F models.

SWMBO has categorically told me that it's not a felt bag, it was the original bag that came with the dust extractor, she reckons that it's possibly calico or canvas.
JChappo I thought about getting those plastic bags but how do you attach them? The bag that came with the extractor has a large hose clamp that is sewed into the bag and looks difficult to get out, H and F said it was hard to get out but not sure if they know what they're talking about.
Kev that cartridge is just about worth more than my extractor .

I have a large "hose clamp" 1500mm long that came off my 2hp collector when I put a pleated cartridge filter on it. If it is any use to you you can have it as I will eventually throw it out.

In that case that's what I would patch it with.

Well the air has to go somewhere which is why cloth is used so the air can get out but the bag will retain the chips. The two cloth bag systems rely on the fact that both bags transmit air. If the number of cloth bags is reduced to one the blower simply won't carry enough air because it has to blow it all out of one bag which it cannot do. This is why two cloth bags work so poorly when the bottom bag is more than half full. In these systems, if the top bag is replaced with a pleated filter then the bottom bag can be replaced with a plastic bag because the top bag has 3-5 times the surface area of the two original cloth bags.
DCs that are designed with a cloth top bag and a plastic bottom bag are design that way (and usually the cloth bags are bigger). In this case if the cloth bag is converted to plastic then no air goes into or out of the bags.

Thanks Bob for the explanation. I guess plastic bags are out of the question then, I wish the sales staff selling these products could have told me this from the start.

Thanks Herbie for your offer, it looks like my options are a little limited and I may have to try and patch what I have not that I've done this before but I'll give it a go. I'll try and let you know sooner rather than later if your hose clamp is needed, for now I need to get a sewing needle.

I have two dust extractors in my shed. Both came with cloth bottom bags. I replaced both with plastic bags and they both work just as good as before. I have replaced the top of the Jet with a pleated filter and the Woodman still has the cloth top. I will at some point change the Woodman to a pleated filter. I got a close enough fit for the Jet and got some sticky back rubber strip from Clark Rubber to make it a non dust leak fit. Go the plastic bag route as it is cheaper and you can see when the bag is full. Just get a bag that is close enough diameter and fold it to fit . The clamp holds it in place. I fitted Aldi trailer ratchet straps around each machine to hold the plastic bags better. I am running the pleated filter machine to the spindle and disc sanders and radial arm and bandsaw and the cloth bag machine to buzzer and thicknesser and spindle moulder and router table.. As an aid when I fit the plastic bags I use some bits of tape to hold the bag in place then clamp or in my case now ratchet strap it. If you don't tape it you will be cursing and fuming as the bag keeps slipping down and is a pain in the rectum.
