Thread: GMC Dust Collector

Darren,

I have that GMC DC in my shed (2 years) and for what I need it to do it works a treat. I move it between by table saw and router table. It's no cyclone, but I think it's good value for money.

I would suggest upgrading to a more flexible hose, because the one that comes with it is easily cracked. Other than that, no complaints.

Bob, how "noisy" is it. My understanding is it has a universal motor and not an induction motor. I am looking around for a DC but would have to work with it in the shed under the house. Can you give a comparison to a table saw or router or thicknesser?

Surprisingly, it's very quiet. Nowhere near the decibels of a table saw or even router. (Nothing is louder than a thicknesser. :eek: ) In fact, if I needed to I would let it run in the background all day and it wouldn't bother me much. Just a sort of soft humming.

Then again, maybe my hearing is going? Nah.!!

Mine has an induction motor. The only DC with a universal/brush type motor I know of is the little one that Timbecon sell - and then its only to increase relative airflow (cfm) due to the higher rpm - it just doesn't suck as hard (inches water)

I have a small shed and no room for a larger DC and associated piping for a fixed unit so I bought one of the GMC units because of the price and the induction motor.

It's quiet. I move it between the thicknesser, and router table and modified the triton dust collector bag to connect the 100mm pipe to. Vast improvement over the shop vac / bucket it replaced.

There will always be better but for $96 with 2year warranty Im happy.

As has been said, you will need new hoses, the one supplied is brittle and will crack and also has quite large 'corrugations' which I suspect does not help the flow of particles too well.

The only issue is that the dust bag quickly fills when connected to the thicknesser, but there are a few solutions for this as well.

I use a very similar 1HP dusty in line with the 2HP one behind the router table. As the router is near the end of the line, the little dusty adds a bit of extra "uummphh" to the flow.

It's a simple, neat and relaible little unit. I bought it (as per the 2HP one) from Total Tools), and, barring a minor hitch with the switch, has been a stirling performer.

From the looks of the machines, I'd say they come from the same factory.

I desperately need to get some form of dust collection in my workshop, now that its starting to look like a workshop and not just a garage and I also want something that I can use on site. This GMC DC looks like a good place to start. The only problem for me is that my local Bunnings, which is Cranbourne doesn't stock them.:mad: And that's despite them starting to revamp the tool store as of last week.

Where is your local Bunnings, Darren?

I have one that i use between my TS and router table. it does the job nicely. I have it outside the workshop so all the fine dust is blown outside.

Hi Duckman,

I saw them in Nunawading Bunnies (Maroondah Hwy)...if you don't want the drive up north, ask them to transfer one to Cranbourne for you. Looked like they'd just come in so other stores may be getting them before xmas too.
