    Default Hafco DC90

Does anyone have any knowledge of the Hafco DC90 dust extractor, it’s 3PH 5Hp, can this be setup to run off a VFD ?

    Cheers
    Andrew

If the motor is not able to diddled so it can direct run from 240V 3P then you could use an Ecogo 240V SP to 415V 3P VFD. They cost a bit more but they seem to work well enough. A couple metal work forum members are using them.

They are available on Bay but Some more details here. VFD Single-phase 220V Input to three-phase 380V Output inverterecogoo

In short, yes, it can be run off a single phase to 3 phase VFD. As long as you can configure it for Delta in the terminal box. Otherwise it will need a bit of work, by the motor rewinder, to bring the star point out to the terminal box.

Those were the droids I was looking for.

Thanks, It sounds like I should be able to get something to work, it should be a bit of an upgrade with the 14” impeller

I think it has a 200mm intake, so I will need to come up with an adapter to drop it down to 150mm

There's no need to reconfigure the motor using the Ecogoo VFD as it boosts the 240V to 415V.

This comes in really handy for 415V DELTA connected motor which cannot be run from 240V 3P (well they do run, but the generate <1/2 the power.

Andrew, get on to Machinery House and ask them for a picture of the motor data plate to determine if it is a multi voltage motor. If they haven't got one let me know and I will ring the Sydney store.

I got hold of Hafco this morning, but they don’t have one in stock.

I looked at a DC90 motor name plate a few years back in the Perth store and all it said was 415V and the rpm 2800, I think it was.
The next step would be to open up the motor junction box, there might be a clue there.

Just a head up that a 5HP motor running at full load from 240V will pull more than 15A at 60Hz - you will need to install a separate HD 20A line and a 25A?

I setup a lot of the Machines in my shed on their own Circuits, so the DC has a dedicated Cable running to it, it currently has a 20A breaker on it, so I might give it a try and go from there

Has anyone here got a DC90 and could check the motor?

Here’s the motor plate off it does this shed any light on how it’s wired ?

Nope - but seeing how it doesn't specifically mention 240V at all its not looking good.

The best thing to do is to look inside the motor connection box.
Even that is no guarantee - and there is no way to measure anything from outside the motor to determine connections internally.
Teh motor would have to be opened up and the coil connections traced to see how it's wired.

If its connected as 415V delta, short of rewiring the motor there is no way to convert it to run under a 240V SP to 240V 3P VFD.
But you always have the possibility of a 240V SP to 415V 3P VFD like the Ecogoo.

I took the cover off the connection box, and I think it’s delta

Unfortunately the photo doesn't help as it could still either be a start (Y) connected or a delta (∆) connected motor with relevant connections inside the motor.
If it's "Y", it could be converted to run on a 240V SP to 240 3P VFD motor but motor will have to be opened and reconfigured internally.
A motor rewinder can easily do this sort of thing.

or for not much more than the cost of a rewinder you can buy a Ecogoo VFD and you won't see to touch the motor.
You will also need a 20A line in the shed to run it safely.

    Default Hafco DC90

Thanks Bob, I have a dedicated circuit to the Dusty Shed that can handle the power, so that side of things is covered, I found a suitable VFD on AliExpress, so I will get one of those underway

Is there any benefit in keeping the lower felt bags ?, I am putting a pair of canister filters on top to reduce the height a bit.

I cut the 3 4” fittings off the front of it, and opened it up to 6”, I would have liked to use the 8” opening, but I am buggered if I can find 8” duct and fittings here in NZ
