insert plate on table saw
just one of those 'wake up at midnight thinking.......' questions.
On the old TCS 10HB table saw I have 150mm under table dust extraction, still building the overhead one but the plate that covers the blade, I have made several from MDF with much closer tolerance but, would I improve down draft suction if I drilled a number of 5-10mm holes all over the plate?I would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds

Not much, for example a 10 mm hole, can at DC pressures only draw about 1 CFM. That assumes the full pressure is available at the hole entrance so no other way for the air to get into the DC ducting.
In practice you don't want ANY holes around the back half of the throat plate as the turning blade ends up applying positive pressure to the underside of the plate. The blade itself actually pulls fine dusty air up from the inside of the cabinet to above the table and sprays it around the shed . If you put holes anywhere they should be in the front half of the throat plate as the blade spin applies a positive air pressure to the top of the plate. But rather than making holes in the throat plate where timber can get caught in the best thing is to remake the OH dust collection AND blade guard itself.
Two basic principles for OH blade guard and dust collection.
- completely open back so that lots of air can get in so that dust can get dragged out.
- collection point at top front of blade to go with air flow across the blade (ie back to front)
eg - yeah I know this way over engineered but you might get some ideas.

One hole in a throat plate worth having is this one as it reduces the forward scattering of chips

Where is the air coming from when the plate is covered during cutting?

One of our forum members, Dennis, runs a video channel on Youtube, and has approached a Zero Clearance Table Saw insert by making his own.
He's done quite some work and testing on this, and has the following design: YouTube
