    Default Heads-Up: $99 Aldi Auto-Start Power-Tool Dust Extractor

    Dear Gents,

This one seems to have slipped under the radar so far, so I thought I'd better start a thread. I couldn't find a link at the Aldi website, so I took a photo of it myself for you. I haven't got it out of the box because I bought it for my brother.

Going by the fact that I've got the red Arlec replica (bought from K-Mart a couple of years ago) I can tell you - the things are brilliant! I haven't been able to kill mine yet. I've had it hooked up to the Router, and a Random Orbital, and the Auto-Start and Delayed Shut-Down work spot-on every time. It's great with the Orbital because it helps the sandpaper to not clog up. I've even used it to suck residual water out of some Hot Water Systems that I've had to put into storage, and it didn't kill me in the process.

Total Tools are flogging off their replica for about $249! So do yourself a favour and go down to Aldi right now and grab one - fast! You will not find any other 30L Stainless Steel Wet&Dry Vac with Auto-Power-Tool-Start-Up for anywhere near the $99 price tag. There were only two left at my local store when I bought mine, so hurry...

    Good Luck,
    Batpig.

    Dear Aussie,

It's a pleated paper/cardboard filter of the type shown in the first photo below. I've seen them at the BigB - either $20 or $30. I've never had to buy one because I've always just cleaned mine right off with a dustpan brush. Anything sucked into the tank that doesn't stick to the filter just falls straight down into the bagless tank which is shown in the second photo below.

The third photo is a closeup of the Power Take-Off for your power tools. There are two switches so that you can either use the thing like a normal vacuum cleaner, or have it automatically start up with any power tool (up to 1400w) that's plugged into the front. There is also a rubbery stepped adaptor that can help to plug it into the dust outlets of various tools (went straight into my Makita Random Orbital...)

Just remember, the Taurus version is grey. That's my red Arlec in the photos below. Exactly the same thing otherwise, though.

    Best Wishes,
    Batpig.

    Dear KM,

I bought mine at Chermside, but my brother was over at Aldi Toombul today and he reckoned they had several of them over there (Remember, there was only a couple at Chermside yesterday...)

    Good Luck with it,
    Batpig.

Do I detect a dodgy 15A outlet for the switched output?

I would not have thought that would be legal with what I presume is a 10A plug to go into the wall.....

    Really?
Why does the close up image clearly show 15A ?

Granted those pictures are of the "equivalent" Arlec version.

not sure, but I wont usually reply to a statement without having my facts right. Given that I now have one sitting in the shed I can definitely tell you that its 10A

OK, without any other information to go on, I have to presume you have the Aldi model? - you have not clarified this so arguments will ensue!

Batpig's images are of the Arlec model - that is a certainty.

The fact still remains that Batpig's vacuum has a dodgy 15A socket on what I presume to be a 10A leaded appliance.
A vacuum with a true 15A plug and wiring would have a somewhat limited audience, especially considering the nature of the K-mart red Arlec pedigree.
This would certainly contravene electrical legislation.

Sticking a max 1000W sticker next to the socket will not stop somebody plugging in their welder because the socket still accepts the big earth pin without complaint.

You and I would not do this I am sure, but there are a lot of people out there who would say "if the shoe fits, wear it", in this instance managing to get a 15A appliance to "work" in a 10A wall socket is a bonus.

    Dear Ray,

I just tuned in now, and you're right - my Arlec's got the larger socket. I guess Arlec would just refer anyone who either blew the vacuum or tripped a 10A circuit to either the 1000w sticker, or the Instruction Manual.

Regarding the Aldi unit, it's power outlet sticker said 1400w (because the Vac is rated at 1000w compared to my Arlec's 1400w - unfortunate vice-versa of numbers), but I can't remember whether the outlet socket was normal 10A or not. My brother took it home with him last night so I can't check, but I did tell him to pull it apart and try to work out how much "Juice" he could run through it, because he wanted to know whether he might get away with running his 235mm GMC Platinum through it. He is a fully-qualified electronic wizard, so I told him that it was possible that they might just be chucking the 1400w sticker on the front on the expectation of domestic 10A circuits being the usual supply, whereas the thing itself might be internally still able to run off a 15A circuit with something like a 2400w saw in tow (ie. 1000w Vac + 2400w Saw = about 14.2A), so he might get around to having a look.

Well spotted . The Aldi one worked great when I plugged my 875w drill into the front to test it. My 1400w-Vac/1000w-Tool Arlec has worked fine out of 10A whenever I've had my 1600w Mitre Saw running off it...

    Best Wishes,
    Batpig.
