    Default Help to bypass extractor on/off switch

    Hi Folks,

    I am installing a Sherwood 3HP DE and will have a remote on/off switch for the circuit away from the machine. The machine is shipped with a non-latching on/off switch, so I need to bypass this so the machine will turn on again remotely after it is switched off.

    I have pulled the installed switch and can see the active and neutral mains coming in (blue and brown on the bottom), and then the two wires that go to the motor (red and blue at the top). So I assume the simplest way is to just bypass the switch entirely and connect the mains directly to the motor. If you agree, can anyone tell me if it is blue to blue and brown to red, and if I get it wrong, will the only consequence be that the motor spins in reverse?

    I have a sparky due in a couple of weeks, but this should be simple, right?

    The existing switch is there for a safety reason, so that the fan won't restart after a power outage while you are in there checking to see if something is stuck in the fan. The only really safe way to do this is to relocate the switch to the remote location but this raises issues with the fact that you can then plug it into some other outlet. If the sparky hard wires the unit this problem goes away.

    P.S. A better solution is to replace the existing switch with one that has the facility of remote operation.

    The motor won't spin in the wrong direction. Just bypass the switch. Brown to Red, Blue to blue. I usually just join the cables and leave the switch there to fill the hole but you can replace it with an appropriately sized plate and a simple on/off switch. Just make sure the switch is rated the same as the one you are replacing i.e. 16Amp

    I did that to my little one on the table saw, and then put a power point on the back of the saw that is energised when the saw is turned on, so the dust extractor runs every time, it works well.

    Just extend the wires coming out and put that safety switch somewhere more accesible. I plan on doing something similar, but im only moving mine about 1m

    Neil, just thread a zip tie around the switch to hold it on. Easily reversible and works like a charm on the installations I've needed to do it on.
