You do realize the man lives in Finland. He has as many 0ºC and below days in a year as he does above. Hence the need for good filtration.

Here it's frozen from end of September to End of March with a month or more of daytime highs of -20ºC and nights of -40ºC along with whatever wind chill the wind brings

We have an extremely moderate climate for being this far north. The sea is warming our winters and cooling our summers. Last winter was the warmest we have had in centuries and we didn't reach -20 celsius in the whole winter. Normal winters involve freezing temperatures from early December to late early April of which a couple of weeks are below -20 but very rarely below -30. However we do on a few occasions in a lifetime reach the point when the sea is totally frozen over and then we get an inland climate and then the temperature may drop to -40 and stay below -30 for weeks.

The plan is to blow the fine dust outdoors in summer and filter it in winter.

Not sure Pete, but I don't think so.

I had a chat with a salesman at Teca (the local supplier) yesterday. He will send me information and pricing by e-mail if he can find a suitable product.

If not I will start going through your suggestions.

They say theese cartridges are commonly used for fine wood dust.

    That do you think?

I have been using the cyklone a bit blowing the air outside.

Well....I swear the cyklone stands on end on the floor but the forum software is calibrated for down under and got it only halfways right.....

Now I am building a plywood filter housing for the four filter cartridges I bought from Dinair

Just had to have a better look at this, it's quite impressive. Is there much of a discharge from the outlet? Can you elaborate on how the filter housing box is designed to work.

Thanks for turning the pictures right side up.

There is surprisingly little dust coming out the outlet from the cyclone.
There was quite a bit of it for quite a while but last week I finally found the culprit hidden in plain sight. I had forgotten to put a rubber gasket under the lid of the dust barrel. When there was a lot of coarse dust on it's way from the planer/thicknesser and the fan worked hard to suck it through the ducting then the dust inside the cyclone did not find it's way down into the barrel as there was a little updraft resulting from air leaking into the barrel from outside. Once I found out what was wrong and mounted a rubber seal under the lid only a tiny bit of fine dust comes out the outlet. Seemingly a significantly smaller amount than what finds it's way through the filter bag of an ordinary bag over bag collector.

The filter box will hold 4 cartiridge filters. 33cm in outer diametre and 120cm high. Total filter area is 76 square metres. The filters are intended for filtering dust coming from the outside of the cartridge. The folds of the filter material are more open on the outside of a tubular cartridge and hence it will be easier to clean the filters as the dust can easily find it's way out from the folds.

The cabinet is 160cm high inside so there will be 40cm of free space under the filters. The intention being that when the air coming from the cyclone is blown into the box from the side some 30cm above the bottom the lowered air speed will make some of the remaining dust settle on the bottom of the box instead of being sucked up to the filters. A bit like a baffle.
My intention is that this will provide a margin of safety against excessive filter wear if I accidentally overfill the dust barrel at some point and all dust goes through the cyclone and to the filter box.
I also hope this baffle function will extend the time between filter cleanings thereby extending the life of the filter cartridges.
The door on the box will be screwed shut with rubber seals and wingnuts. It's purpose its to provide easy access when I remove the filters for cleaning outdoors or replace worn out filters.
There will most likely be a hand hole on the end of the box right at the bottom which I can open and rake out whatever dust that has accumulated on the bottom of the box.
