Default Another (hopefully) simple dust extractor question

I知 looking to set up a pretty simple dust extraction system in my workshop.
Great info here, but perhaps too much for a novice like me.

The relevant machines I have are:

Table saw with 100mm outlet in base and 32mm (I assume) in blade guard.
Mitre saw with 2 x 32 mm outlets
Triton router table with simple 32 mm outlet in fence. No outlet in base, but I could probably do a DIY mod if it seems worthwhile.

Otherwise it is hand held power tools with small dust ports if I use them.

Workshop is two bays in a large shed. Roof is about 5 m high at apex. Two large roller doors at front.

I知 thinking the extractor is mobile. When on table saw it can be placed at the door and possibly outside. Otherwise it is inside close to the machine being used.
100mm flexi hose to as close as possible to the machine, then reducing to required size close to machine.

I知 in country QLD, so freight is an issue. Local Trade Tools has generic extractors (branded Renegade) in 2 HP and 3 HP sizes.

The 3 HP is less than $100 more than the 2HP, but given my set up, is there any advantage in the 3 HP? My interpretation of what I have read here is -probably not. But what I know about dust extraction makes my opinion close to worthless.

Also, given my set up, is there significant benefit in getting a pleated filter. It will have to come from a different supplier as Trade Tools don稚 sell them.

would appreciate input from those with more knowledge on the subject.

Irrespective of the DC used it is not possible to obtain decent dust extraction with 100 mm or less ducting and small ports on machines - they have to be opened up as much as possible. Its not possible in one post to explain all this and it sounds like you have to bite the bullet and read up a bit more about dust extraction on this forum. Yes there is no getting around invest some time in doing this. Start with maybe the Ducting FAQ.

The 3 HP is less than $100 more than the 2HP, but given my set up, is there any advantage in the 3 HP? My interpretation of what I have read here is -probably not. But what I know about dust extraction makes my opinion close to worthless.
At the budget end of the 3HP range all you really get are same impeller as a cheap 2HP but teh 3HP will come with basic twin filter/collection bags. The twin bags have less restriction than a single bag so translates into slightly more flow and longer times between emptying collection bags. Personally I reckon they are worth the $100 or so they cost provided you have room for the bigger footprint. At the more expensive end of the 3HP range you get a 13" fan and better filters. This translates to even more flow although added cost can be significant so only you can determine if its worth it. Better still would be a 3 phase motor running on single phase via a VFD so the motor can be spun faster for a 20% flow improvement - this is definitely worth the extra cost,

Also, given my set up, is there significant benefit in getting a pleated filter. It will have to come from a different supplier as Trade Tools don稚 sell them.
Pleated filters provide between 5 and 10% more flow and they don't get clogged as quickly. This doesn't sound like much but if you can afford it they are worth it.

It depends on how much use you make use of your shed. If you are just an occasional user then you could use a stock 2HP machine, 100 mm and smaller ducting and don't worry about the size of the dust ports on the machines purely to collect the visible dust
    AND
Install some decent forced ventilation to reduce your exposure to the uncollected fine/invisible dust. This ventilation would need to run all the time while dust is being made and for sometime thereafter

Like I said in another post - somewhere between a couple of bathroom fans and one of these.

Thanks for the response Bob. I see you are recognised as the DC expert on this forum and I appreciate your advice.

I am 66 years old and very much a hobbyist. Making stuff for our use only. So machines get heavy use for a couple of weeks during a project, then only light use for extended periods till the next project.

Shed my workshop is in has a 32 Amp limit. That is the size breaker on the main property switchboard feeding to sub board in the shed. Shed also houses my wife's air conditioned sewing room that I recently built for her at one end.

The extra $100 for the basic 3 HP unit is not a problem. The extra size of the bigger machine is of only minor concern. Buying 2 pleated filters (which I assume I would need) for the 3 HP machine is starting to be an issue if I do that upgrade. It doubles the cost of the machine.

I've read enough to know there are serious limitations with generic mobile set ups and 100 mm and smaller pipes. But they are are major step up from my current DC - a $150 shop vac.
Given all my circumstances, I'm looking for the best solution I can for under $1,000 and I accept the limitations that creates.

Life is full of compromises. I just need to learn enough to help me make the right one in this case.

Thanks again for your wise input.

Sounds like forced ventilation is going to suit and maybe wear a mask for some of that heavy machine use.
