Default Inspection Light For Dust Bin

I fitted a polycarbonate window to my dust bin. However it's hard to tell what the actual sawdust level is when the machine is running with the sawdust swirling around. And it fills up fast when thicknessing.

So I fitted a 3W 12V LED downlight bulb to the bin lid. The lid stays with the machine when the bin is being emptied, so the bulb can be permanently wired. The light is powered whenever the dusty is running. Works a treat. I just made a Delrin retaining ring to hold it in place. MDF would work too as the bulb runs cool.

    Neat!

If you fitted a photo sensor on the outside, say 3/4 of the way up the transparent slot, it could sound an alarm to tell you to empty it.

Thanks Bob. I think something like that is commercially available, but I've read they are prone to error. There are just so many chips flying around in the whirlwind that I think it would be difficult to calibrate such a device. It would probably only be accurate when the blower is off and the dust settles.

I'd fit the sensor at the top of the window, and then adjust the sensitivity to trigger when things go black. That way, it only triggers when the sawdust fills to above the window and no light gets through. You'd have to make sure it was only wired to activate with the dusty/bulb, or it'd alarm when you switched the lights off for bedtime.
