    Default Lathe Dust Extraction

    Hi,

I am looking at getting a Woodfast Mini Lathe from Carbatec and mounting it on a table 1200 x 700. I currently have a 2hp dust extractor and am making a cyclone.

The table will be located right next to my main dust extractor ducting run where the piping is 6”. I know lathes are one of the worse offenders for producing sawdust so I am looking at installing the most effective sawdust method.

How effective have people found the ‘big gulp’ type dust hoods. I notice that the shop bought types only have a 4” inlet, would it be worth making my own with a 6” fitting (can make it out of sheet metal or MDF and integrate it into the table to maximise the sawdust recovery rate.

Another option is the Carbatec adjustable dust extraction hood modified to take a 6” inlet. I like this design because it may limit some of the wood chips flying back at me.

Interested to hear what has worked for other mini lathe operators and how best to contain the mess.

    Regards,
    Chris

Dust extraction will not limit the bits flying towards you, they are designed for dust control only.

You will find most shavings will be towards the operator so you will have to clean up after yourself.

When sanding this will be the time when the dust extractor is most usefull.

    Thanks Jim,

I agree most of the wood chips tend to flow down the chisel toward the user so I was thinking of incorporating a floor sweep to my dust extractor to help the clean up after a days work but I am interested in any ideas on how to control dust/chips while turning.

The Big gulp works well for me right close to source when sanding, with a 4" duct and 2 HP dusty.

The floor sweep is marginal. With the trailing edge blocked off with tape it will suck most stuff up but slowly and not out of corners, and chips go everywhere so dragging around enuff duct is a pain ; I just use a pan and brush.
    Cheers, Ern

I've a 2hp and the gulp. It does pick up some curlies but is really for the dust

If you do get one I'd suggest you get a piece of gutter guard or something similar to hinge over the scoop when sanding - that way the sandpaper is isn't sucked into the machine. DAMHIK

Actually I had a piece get caught in one of the blades - made a hell of a racket
