    Default location for extraction hood for wide belt sander

    hi all

    I have finally bought a min condition second hand SCM wide belt sander and will be getting some serious ducting (lip-lock system) installed, I will be posting installation photos in the future to come,

    some background:
    The sander is a SCM Uno, there is no air nozzle blower to clean the belt and there is only one extraction hood at the top, it measures 125mm x 85mm, the cross sectional area is equivalent of 125mm dia ducting.

    I plan to add air nozzle to clean the belt as I do sand gummy timber from time to time and the workshop is setup for "semi production". the standard blower uses 700 litres/min (no timer) and the sander uses 100l/min for belt tensinoning, the compressor I will be using is capable of 1080l/min.

    The ducting will be the smooth lip-lock system, the extractor is a 4kw - 24 socks air filter system (this will be upgraded to an outdoor extraction unit in the near future.)

    Plan A:
    I wanted to add extra hoods, the main trunk is 250mm diameter, this is about
    2 x 150mm
    1 x 125mm (this will service the factory hood)

    I plan to add the hood in the following positions:

    2 x 100mm
    1 x 150mm
    1 x 125mm

    I plan to add the hoods in the following positions.

    which is better? 2 opening of 100mm on each side of the back or 1 x 150mm at the centre?

    the hood at the rear of the sander will be pointing 45deg up in both case.

    The shaving/dust will need to travel 3500mm before it reaches the fan

    For a wide belt sander more openings across a wider area of dust production is better than one opening in the middle.

    Do your calcs based on the flow rates possible through ducting and NOT the cross sectional areas of ducting.

    1) Max flow rate of 100 mm ducting is ~400 cfm
    2) Max flow rate of 150 mm ducting is ~1200 cfm

    THEREFORE 3 x 100 mm equals 1 x 150 mm.

    So where you have 1 x 150 replace that with 3 x 100 mm, 2 closer to each side and one in the middle.

    Is there a past history of the dust extraction being inadequate? If not then why change it, placing ducts on the front or rear of the machine will be a PIA during use and for maintenance, an air nozzle to clean the belt will not prevent the belt gumming up

    I agree that the extra ducting might get in the way a bit, but you'd be surprised at just how much an air blower can help.

    thanks Bob, I will go with he 3 x 100mm across the back panel near the conveyor belt.
