Default Mods to Timbecon 3hp cyclone

    I’ve gone and ordered a https://www.timbecon.com.au/sherwood...dust-extractor
but then I found this section on this forum. Seems there is a bit of discontent with this machine. I have Hammer combination unit and bandsaw with 5” ports, router table has 5” too, so I thought I’d found the perfect answer given that this dusty has a 5” inlet ( I’ve ordered a 6mt x 5” hose as well)
keep in mind I’m stepping up/sideways? from a 2hp single stage Carbatec with a couple of standard cloth bags on it.

    So my questions are:

1.. is 6” pvc pipe cheap enough to build some ducting with, and what about elbows etc? Then run 5” flex to machines?

2.. would it be feasible for a average hack diy’er to fab a 6” inlet onto this new unit?

As an aside my shed is 12 x 7 with a 12 x 2.5 metre extension and I’m looking at a couple of fans to ventilate it with roller door open. I have no neighbours nearby.

thanks for any advice and sorry if I’m raising stuff that’s been done to death.

5" hose can at most move about 770CFM send it back and replace it with 6" which can move up to about 1250 CFM.

The Timbecon DC can easily be modified to take a 6" duct. Have a read of the sticky in teh dust forum on how to modify the 2HP to a 6" intake and modify the 3HP in teh same way.

Thanks for replying Bob. Are you talking about the stickyThe Generic 2HP DC

As far as I can see this is referring to a single stage unit. What I’ve bought is one of the cyclone units.

I was hoping that someone may know how to make a new inlet pipe to attach to the side of cyclone for 6”

I think I need to see the Bill Pentz thread, do you have the link? EDIT. Don’t worry I googled him.

Oh dear - in that case you cannot do much about it. You will have to use 6" PVC because using 4" will significantly restrict air flow.

Unfortunately it won't capture all the fine dust at source so that will escape back into the shed.

An alternative (extra) solution would be to instil exhaust fans to youR shed to continually vent fine dust.
Unfortunately for your size shed you are going to need quite a few fans to meet the 20 room changes per our KPI.
Also bear in mind that most manufacturers claims bout air flow are in reality about half the claim.

For clarity's sake, what is the issue with the cyclone option? Is it because the fittings just can't be change to 6"?

I'm asking as I will have to do something quite similar down the road.

    Cheers

Hi Fluddman, I guess I’m just a bit worried that because I’ve read that 6” is the bee-knees and the dusty has only 5”. AFAIK there’s no such thing as 5” pvc pipe but I’m hoping someone knows different. 6” obviously flows better and it’s be good to not have the choke point on dusty. I guess one could fab a 6” inlet but what about the outlet at bottom of cyclone - I dunno if that also has to be bigger?
Im thinking that I’ll just leave it alone perhaps and use the 5” flex for now (there’s warrantee to think about too). A side project to get on with would be putting some extractor fans in to get rid of dust laden air, that would help my probs no-end, as everything has that fine layer on it. As someone said firing up the leaf blower every now and again keeps things cleaner!!!
    Does that answer your question?

Hi Andrew … I bought one of the timbecon 3hp cyclone dc’s last month and have hooked it up to 150mm stormwater pipe. I used a Blauberg 150/125mm Duct Reducer from Bunnings ($16) …. I just had to heat it up a bit with a heat gun to fit over the 125mm cyclone outlet…works well … hope this helps

thanks heaps for that. Should work well and I don’t have to fart around with inlet on machine.

I guess the big issue with that is you're still restricted at the dusty intake of 5". you can find 125mm pipe, its just not as common so not as cheap.

I get that but over a long length 6” will flow better than 5”. Or so I’d expect/hope.
When I get machine I’ll be using the 5” flex for a while and that may be enough ???
Having a couple of projects on the go doesn’t bode well for getting the dust system up to scratch. I’m just over my old single stage unit and its clouds every time I fire it up.

I wouldn't use 5" ducting, go for the 6" ducting and use the shortest possible lengths of 5" flexy - sooner or later you will be dissatisfied with the Timbecon unit unit and look to upgrade - if you use 5" ducting you will have to rip it all out to maximise the benefit of the new unit.

5” (125mm) pvc pipe is normally pressure pipe and is expensive - see this site which has some of the cheapest prices in OZ.
If you do a search for 125mm fittings such as elbows etc you will also find there is a very limited range.

Go for 6” as BobL suggested.
