multiple blowers ???
Hi all. Has anyone tried using more than one blower on a 4inch dust extractor system? I have just built a blower and cyclone from scratch and whilst the suck is reasonale I would like to increase it. would two blowers give double suck? connected in series or parallell?? My knowledge is all borrowed or guesswork. Air handling is wierd stuff. anybody out there can help??

Sturdee did that relatively recently but you'd have to search for it unless someone remembers it.

I think I read somewhere that putting them in series will result in one of them force feeding the other and overloading it.

They'd have to be in parallel wouldn't they ? I don't think in series would do much at all.

Theoretically series should increase the vacuum level but parallel should increase the air flow volume

Who's Theory Bob? I guess I will have to build another blower and stitch them together and find out what happens.

Its a matter of fluid dynamics,
but its many years since I (briefly) studied it,
maybe someone with letters after their name can tell you more.

I've got letters after my name but I think it means something very rude!!! Seriously though, I thought it was air and dust not fluid. All I know is that a session in my w/shop leaves me feeling congested and unwell. I need more airflow or something to allow me to work in comfort. I am also running a large fan blowing air directly out through the lowest part of the wall, hoping to get the suspended dust out as quickly as poss. Dust masks and spectacles dont mix well.I also run a shop vac system to router table and mitre saw. but still too much dust for my liking.

Air is a fluid.... not to be confused with liquid.
I 2nd what Bob says....
Parallel will give you more volume & series will give you more suction, roughly.Cliff.

Put a drop of dishwashing detergent on the lenses of your spectacles and polish into the lens with a tissue, no more foggy glasses.

thanks guys. I can see clearly now!!! I am using large washing machine motors rated at around 3/4 to 1 hp with a 300x 150 impellor for my blower and it sounds a bit like a Mazda rotary motor. Will a series setup increase the noise dramatically or would a parallell setup be quieter?

Suck it & see, let us know the results.
I'd guess that the series would be louder 'cos the no load air would move faster. (maybe?)Cliff.

Thanks Cliff. It will take me a while to build another blower. The time I am able to spend in thw w/shop about a week I will post result when I have tried it. Has anyone seen the new cheapo extractor from GMC? I saw one in a box at my local Mitre 10. Rated at about 500 cfm I think and I believe about $100
