    Default Noise and Dust Extraction

Hi was looking for a bit of info. I currently have a 1 hp dust extractor and was looking to replace it witha 2 hp. The question is would the 2 hp be twice as noisy or hardly and difference than the 1 hp. Trying not to upset the neighbours.

    Cheers Jerryj

I'll tell you in a few weeks when my new (to me) 2 Hp Dusty turns up and I can compare it to my 1 Hp version. Both Hairy Forbes models.

I have both 1 & 2 HP and I'd say it's abit louder but not twice as loud, maybe a 3rd louder

I have both DCs and agree the 2HP is not a lot louder but it is clearly distinguishable as being louder, exactly what this means in terms of numbers is a bot more complicated

Twice as loud translates to 3bB louder on the dB scale.
1/3 louder translates to about 1.25 dB which most human ears would have trouble detecting.
To hear a clear difference in volume the human ear needs the sound level difference to be ~2 dB or 75% louder.

My guess is it is probably more than twice as loud but because of how our ears work it doesn't seem quite that way.

My fire up the dB meter some time and measure the actual sound p levels

Thanks for the replies. Maybe I will have to build some kind of enclosure if I go ahead and buy one.

Default It will definately be louder

You will feel it is louder. Then again a 2hp as opposed to a 1hp system will actually pick up the dust (as opposed to the chips).

There is a lot of information out there on the web (for free!) about how to go about reducing the effects of DC noise. If you are planning on externally venting your system (which is the only effective way of preserving your health) then a baffled box diffuser enclosure is effecive, simple and inexpensive.

Just a heads up about enclosures. If it blocking sound changes are it is blocking air flow and the motors do get hot. Are you concerned about noise for a) yourself inside the shed or b) the neighbors. If a) then that's another good reason to put it outside the shed.

Hi Bobl the extractor is situated outside the shed under the lean too I'm more bothered about noise for the neighbours.

BobL, although I haven't measured, I don't think the motor gets hot, apart from the motor having its own fan, the expelled air from the filter circulates the air within the enclosure and surprisingly keeps it very clean, although since adding sound absorbing material to my enclosure, eventually there will trapped dust.

I agree, enclosing the whole DC is the best way to do it as the air leaving the enclosure also removes motor heat. I was referring to just enclosing the motor.
