noise reduction at gore point
Jcge is in the process of looking at a fan, fan housing and cyclone build, in his thread I mentioned the fan distance and the gore point and possible noise reduction strategies, I am in the process of painting the small fan housing I made a while back, I cut some card to illustrate an approach to noise reduction and took a few pics of....
top view parrallel.jpg parrallel1.jpg vee shape gore point.jpg
First pic is a top view with a piece of card which temporarily extends to give a gore point of about 3mm away from the fan, second is a side view with a fan blade lined up with the gore point, this is where the noise is generated, third is one strategy to break up the pulse of air as it passes the gore point, in this case an external vee, could also be an internal vee or an angle from top to btm. There would also be other designs/shapes to break up the pulse.

try the serrated edge, or a shallow wave it does change the amount of noise that is produced

Finger slots like some jointers, surfacer in your parlance, have. Are you planning on trying several shapes and measuring the noise, to do comparisons?

Yep, I think any shape/design that is not parallel to the fan blade would all reduce noise, whether one shape was better than another does sound like it might be an interesting project, I don't have any sort of test equipment that would be able to discern any real differences. I think the test to do would be to test various shapes in conjunction with any differences in flow, there may be one particular shape that reduces noise and either doesn't effect or maybe even improves flow, if we say noise is energy and we reduce noise perhaps that energy can go to a little more flow.

Some good concepts there for consideration Pete. I guess rounding of the gore point could also reduce the noise somewhat. Avoiding the parallel cutting of the airstream seems the right direction to me.
