My ongoing adventures in Dust collection.
After getting some feed back and reading the sticky, I set about modding my 2HP dusty. I had originally built a Thein baffle. 100mm inlet 125mm outlet.
Attachment 485905
I liked it, the impeller was protected, very very little dust got past it and it was vented outside. Trouble was it pulled bugger all air flow.
Plan A was to upgrade the inlet to the impeller and the inlet to the drum to 150mm.

The finished PVC inlet is more refined and the impeller side of the new base plate was rounded over and smoothed to try and emulate a bell moth hood. To mount the new base I removed the original bolts and drilled and filed the holes. This let me remove the threads completely. I replaced them with countersunk screws and nylocks. Its much smoother in there now. A new pickup was built and rounded over as well.

The exhaust was upgraded to 150mm, the whole thing was reassembled and tested. The results were impressive. Huge airflow gains had been made I was stoked. Trouble was the airflow at the inlet didn't match the outflow. Then I remembered I hadn't closed the drum up after I had emptied it before I started. After closing up the felt airflow was only fractionally better than before I started.
Plan B
Ditch the Thein baffle and return to the factory set up, with a pleated filter. Ok not quite factory.

The felt airflow is I would guess 3 times what I had with the original Thein setup. Next steps were to upgrade all the machines. I am not done yet, the table saw is proving to be more complicated than I thought.
Band saw.

I cleaned the band saw and tested the new setup with some MDF scraps. I couldn't find any thing. It still needs some refinement.
Thicknesser

This is the markII version.

No photo but I have bell mouth hood that gets locked into place using the thicknesser bed. I will be making a custom housing to try and improve the collection.
Currently I have 1200mm of 150mm PVC and the minimum flex I can get away with to hook the DC to the machines. The improvement in the collection is massive. I know I am not getting 1200CFM but I am a lot closer.

comment on your band saw if I may, 2nd photo, I would use a reducer (pic attached) for first hose then a 100/150 Y this I think would give smoother air flow but I stand to be corrected by those with more knowledge.
sending a PM as well.I would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds

JI’d have to agree with BobL re flow. I made all the mods you made and measured the airflow with a Hotwire anemometer. I have over 6 metres of 150mm pipe attached and the best I have achieve on the long run is about 780cfm from memory. My readings are in the the mod thread.

Thanks all
Tonyz - I have replied to your PM. I am wondering if it will produce an improvement, at the moment the two 100mm flexi's are deformed but the inlet area should be mostly unchanged. The reducer would produce smoother airflow but bringing it down to 100mm and then branching it out to two 100mm runs "might" not bring an increase in air flow. I don't have a means of producing an airflow figure so if the change is not large I really couldn't tell. At the moment it seems to work ok.
Havebeer69 - Yep that's exactly what it is. The bending was done with a heat gun, very cheap XU1 from bunnings, a couple of clamps and some scrap timber to hold it all flat. The end cap is some scrap ply held in with sealant and thin ally sheet. The hold downs are bungee straps.
BobL - All my "measurements" are feel and perception. I don't own or have access to actual test equipment. All my estimates based on how it feels to my un-calibrated hand. There was considerable choking after the Thein previously. It was reduced to 5 inch, I had 4m(ish) of ally flexi ducting into a home made Y junction to two 100mm PVC runs of about 6m. It was vented outside without filters. I posted some pics in another thread quite some time ago and your estimate of the airflow was under or about 300CFM from memory. So if I am now at 800ish CFM I have at least doubled my airflow. I do take your point about the tight bend from the blower to the drum. I wasn't happy with it but I need to keep it mobile and get it back into action. Sounds like a perfectly good reason to build a custom DC trolley in the near future.
