    Default Plastic bags

In frustration, I’m starting a thread to see if anyone else has had experience with sealing the fold over dart on the plastic bags on the common 2 hp dust collectors? By that I mean where you have to fold the edge of the bag over itself because they make the bag about 1&1/2 inches bigger than the drum that it gets strapped to. I’ ve tried everything including folding it over the other way, and also taping it over itself with gaffer tape. It’s the only point of dust leakage I have in the system, and because the machines and the dust collector are set up in the living area of an almost finished house ( an extremely BIG house) I want to keep dust to an absolute minimum.
    who knows the trick?

Hot air gun set on "low" on the metal bend might soften (or even melt) the plastic so it self seals?

Polyethylene melts between 100 and 120ºC so some experimentation may be needed.

Is it possible to get a strap around it? I'll admit I don't know how the setup looks, but if it goes around a mouth I'd suggest a ratchet strap to pull it snug

I bought mine second hand and it had a ring of dense sponge material glued just above the lip that the bag goes over. I thought it was from the factory but maybe the Mens shed fitted it?
Before I went to the drum, instead of the bags, I used a small piece of blue painters tape to stick the bag in position, at a number of locations, then secured it with the metal spring loaded band on that sponge. No leaks.

this is a picture I just took. The sponge is somewhat worse for wear but you can see it.

    +1 for foam.

I got sick of the leaks at my old work and bought some 25x10mm sticky-back foam tape from Clark Rubber, no more leaks after that.

Yes man it has a stainless steel band /strap that holds it, my issue is the bags are too big and about 1&1/2” needs to be folded over itself to make the bag snug before the strap is tensioned, and the dust leaks from this fold.

I put foam around mine some time ago as described above. I hold the bag in place with 5 or 6 rare earth magnets until I get the metal strip on and pull it up tight after folding the last inch or so over on itself. No leaks. The hardest part is to get the strap into position.

Where did you get those drums Derek?

I bought them on Gumtree. They are likely available on eBay or a paint shop - the are called "painter's drums".
