    Default Portable dust extraction.

I am thinking I want a portable (on casters or similar)dust collector.
    The more compact the better.
I have seen where others recommend a minimum of 2hp systems.
Can any one suggest anything with out breaking the bank...under $700?

$700 is a reasonable budget & most of the generic 2hp DE's are in that range. I would suggest the pleated filter upgrade though, much more efficient.

Consider what machines you will have it connected too. One disadvantage with the generic 1hp & 2hp DE's though, they don't like the shavings / chips from conventional 2 or 3 blade thicknessers as they clog constantly on the inlet "screen" at the DE. Since I changed to a Sherwood helical thicknesser no more clogging!

Oh, and some have a high centre of gravity, a small castor foot print & the castors are pretty small which means they can topple easily on a rough or messy floor. Not so bad when the bag is half full.

What machines do you plan to extract from and how big is your shed?

The portability requirement and your $$ spend limit means there will still have fine dust issues. If you don't have any consider installing some shed ventilation fans.

my shed is too small..its actual size is not important..its TOO SMALL!...9x6x3

honestly I have contemplated a small garden shed at back of shed to house a dust extractor but that means running ducting..more work.
I could run a central main duct with a couple or three access points which could be closed when not in use but as above more work.

its mainly for saw dust and etc chips from wood lathe and planner/thicknesser.

From what your saying sanding dust is going to get thru the filtration of these machines?

    is there any thing better?

With a smaller DC (eg 2HP) the #1 issue is failure to collect enough air or fine dust in the first place.

The second issue with any DC inside a shed the filter is usually less of a problem that leaks, from a number of places.

The most common leak is the seal around the filter and collection bags - even a slight ruck in these will cause a problem.
By the time you notice these - a slight brown/beige stain on the filter or plastic you have filled your shed up with fine dust that you cannot see.
There are better seals but not on <$700 DCs.

The next one is the plastic collection bag. The DC swirls the chips around inside the plastic collection bag which both abrades and punctures the bag. The swirling also minces the chips into finer and finer dust. Again by the time you notice any leaks - shed full of dust.

Other leaks are in the Impeller to collection bags fittings and flanges.

The leakiest DCs I've tested have all been ones that are towed around inside shed. They must be collide with or get bashed into various things, this can puncture the bags etc.

A stock 2HP DC is borderline for even a small shed as they lack sufficient air drawing capability, especially for the 3 machines you describe above. About a 50% improvement in air/fine dust collection can be obtained by nodding the generic 2HP DC according to the sticky thread at the top of the dust forum but will still be tool small for your machines and it won't deal with leaks.

The best way to deal with leaks is to locate the DC outside and run ducting around the shed. However with your size shed, unless you can concentrate the machines at one end even a 3HP DC is probably not enough to deal with the fine dust problem.

However if you are prepared to install exhaust fans they can deal with the fine dust that a) does not get captured and b) leaks from your DC.
For a 9 x 6 x 3 m shed = 162 m^3 shed, targeting 20 room air changes per hour you need 3240 m^3 per hour (~2000 CFM) which unfortunately is a lot of exhaust capability. Bear in mind any manufacturer fans specs you see are wrong by as much as 50%

20 room air changes per hour is a "target" - so let's aim for say 10 (1000CFM) that may be doable with say decent standard 3 bathroom exhaust fans with the louvres removed.

For you size shed, to handle fine dust I would even consider getting a second had Evap AC unit and just run the fan on low. We do that at the mens shed and it works a treat.
