Need a better DC bag system
Hi, I have the 2hp dust collector like the one pictured below, and the real problem is changing the large plastic bags, which are oversized for the rim on which they fit, and are a real PITA for installing. It is really a 2 person job, and then there are air gaps where the clamp strap does not fit properly on the rim.
Has anyone come up with an improved bag system which makes it easier to change these bags?

Those plastic bags are a PITA. I had them on one of my old dustys. They are notorious for leaks where they pleat under the clamping band.
Some manufacturers provide a cloth bag that are a snug fit. My second dusty was rigged this way. Getting bags on and off was a breeze, and it did not seem to leak the way the plastic bags did.
You might like to look around for people who sell dustys with a cloth dust collection bag. You might get lucky and find one that is the same diameter as your machine. The machine I had that was fitted with a cloth dust collection bag came from Trade Tools.
Good luck!

This is a real (perhaps one of the most significant) problem for most basic DCs.
The best seals seem to be those than "snap" into place inside the DC housing rather than clamp on the outside. I reckon these could be made by anyone that can weld plastic.

What I do is hold one bit up and tape it to the frame. Then the next 1/4, etc. makes it a lot easier if there's nobody around to help.

I find attaching a new bag a breeze. I use 3 old speaker magnets which hold the bits of bag to the metal until I can get the strap on and adjusted properly. Some slight issues with where the support bars are but ensure that you do not have any pleats in this area [the magnets do a great job of holding while I do the adjusting] - if the bag is too big [which mine do not appear to be] in diameter then ensure that the fold is only single and is completely flat on itself - the clamp should then keep any leaks to an absolute minimum.
Hope it helps.

I'm with Bob. I use 3 rare earth magnets to 'tack' in place, until I get the clip on.

I have seen all sorts of attempted solutions with mixed results mainly where bags ruck or fold because the diam of the surface over which the bag fit is too small. The solutions include use of firm foam, gaffer, double sided and electrical tapes. If filter bags are not regularly cleaned some of the springs on the clips don't appear to have sufficient tension to hold the air in.

I have the exact same dusty and I have only fitted a bag to it once. In the past several months less than an egg cup full of sawdust has made it into the bag. I have had to empty the collector bin on the cyclone several times. The collector bin is very easy to empty; I designed it that way.
I know that the amount of sawdust in the dusty's bag was so small because I dismantled the dusty frame last night so that I can get on with my dust collection modifications to upgrade to 6" ducting and mount the impeller directly on top of the cyclone and vent it straight out through a hole in the wall.
And Yes changing the bags is a pain - that's one of the reasons I am going to such pains to make sure I NEVER have to do it again.

I am with Bob and Chris using magnets. Before that I used to hold the bag in 4 or 5 places with masking tape then clamp the band on.
I also put a strip of self-adhesive draught-proof foam round the metal cylinder in the groove where the band fits. That helps the band to pull the bag down tight and there is no dust leakage.Tom
