Default PVC strips for front of mitre saw box

    hey everyong,

a few weeks ago I watched some random youtube video and noticed the person in the video had constructed a mitre saw box for dust extraction... but rather then leaving the front open, or closing it off with cut out sections of ply or MDF they actually used the clear PVC strips that you find in shop doors for keeping in air conditioning.

I can't for the life of my find the video I watched any more

I guess it helps keep some of the dust in the mitre saw box, but also allows you do do mitre or bevel cuts with out having to remove any solid faces. would need to be a decentish gauge, Ebay has some 2mm stuff that you can buy in 75mm x 2500mm lengths for around $30 for 3 lengths. I would look to hang them roughly in the shape of the saw giving most protection for 90 degree cuts but this still allows me to turn the saw and still keep alot of the dust captured in the rear

PVC strips on shop doors are actually to help prevent the entry of flies, nothing to do with air conditioning, my personal opinion is they would drive me nuts

The plant I worked in has booths for collecting the dust the metal polishers made (sanded all the edges and smoothed out imperfections on aircraft parts. The booths had those across the front to keep the dust where it was being made and let the blowers remove the airborne dust. There was a gap left across the floor about calf high to let replacement air in. From what you described the plastic is cheap enough to try and see if it works. If you try it let us know what happens.

    give it a go
waiting waiting for pics even if a fail you tried something different.

If you can remember what day you saw the video, on the left side of your youtube page is a long list of stuff, but you should have a history file, scroll down that and you should find what your looking for.

    Arrow

So i spent $30 on the pvc and it turned up.

Started just hanging it last night, just making it up as i went along. Was far too late in the evening to run it and the dust extractor to do some test cuts

Any tests will be purely anecdotal anyway.

As someone mentioned above the biggest hurdle is not make it too annoying or interfere other wise it'll just make using the tool a pain in the . Ive definitely been able to cover over a decent chunk of the open area.

This does become larger with the saw in the "lower/cut" position. The saw motor also pushes some of the flaps open when doing mitres as well.

It still has to be better then no cover at all, and i do notice that alot of people with solid shillouttes have to take them off completely to do mitres.

    So an update to this.

The strips do a pretty decent job of keeping the big dust chunks in. How ever it raised a new issue... turns out the cflux dust extractor is a bit too good

The extractor is actually dragging the strips inwards so will need weighting down if i keep it, or thicker/heavier strips.

Its still ALOT better then nothing. But needs a tiny bit of tweeking
