    Default Impeller imbalance tolerance

    Hi everyone,

First time poster as I've been lurking in these forums, mostly in dust extraction and spent days reading the quality content here and also Bill Pentz's website after discovering him.
I'm also very new to woodworking and frankly some of these posts scared me (rightly so) about fine dust. So while I'd like to spend the $3k on a Clearvue cyclone I'm simply not in a position to yet.
I settled for a 2hp, 12" impeller Leda DC-1500T. I read that, as it has an approx 150mm metal duct from impeller to cyclone that it's quite close to the generic 2hp modification (minus the inlet change of course).
I'm yet to increase the inlet from 125 to 150mm, but will do that in the coming weeks. It will also be used outside for the time being.

My main question though, is how much imbalance in the impeller is too much (or if any)? I might be overly cautious here, but I'd rather be with a (close to) 3000rpm metal unit nearby!

I recorded a video earlier and hopefully it's enough to get an idea. Is this too much or normal? Video is here

Thanks for getting this far. Hopefully I'll have some photos to share after I get going.

What your video is showing is "axial" runout which appears to be much less that the far more significant " radial" runout.
Axial runout is usually caused by the impeller not being perpendicular to the shaft ie collar not welded perpendicular.
Radial runout is due to the collar not being exactly in the middle.

The vibe caused by radial runout and other radial mass imbalances are corrected or balanced out by drilling out material from the base of the impeller during manufacture.

I've seen a few similar to that and provided there is not much vibration while it is actually running then it should be OK.

If you want to compare th LEDAs vibration with another 2HP DC then a mobile phone Vibe app would be one way to do this.

Thanks BobL, much appreciated. As long as it's not going to spin out in the neighbours then that's ok.

I might be pushing it, do you know any resources that have vibration readings of DC's? I don't have anyone to compare from; and can find a lot on noise and power, not so much on vibrations.
